Google Introduces a Free AI Coding Assistant Featuring Generous Usage Limits

by admin

On Tuesday, Google unveiled a new free version of its AI-powered code completion and assistance tool, aptly named Gemini Code Assist for Individuals. Additionally, the company launched Gemini Code Assist for GitHub, a code review agent designed to automatically identify bugs in code and provide suggestions directly within the GitHub platform.

Gemini Code Assist for Individuals enables developers to engage in natural language conversations with a Google AI model through a chat interface, allowing it to access and modify their codebases. Similar to GitHub’s widely-used Copilot tool, this new offering can troubleshoot bugs, complete code segments, and clarify sections of the codebase that may be confusing.

This AI coding assistant is powered by a customized version of Google’s Gemini 2.0 model, specifically optimized for coding tasks. Gemini Code Assist for Individuals can seamlessly integrate with popular development environments such as VS Code and JetBrains through plugins and supports a wide array of programming languages.

Entering notable territory, Code Assist for Individuals provides up to 180,000 code completions per month—90 times the limit of GitHub Copilot’s free plan, which allows only 2,000 code completions. Furthermore, developers have access to 240 chat requests daily, nearing five times the number permitted by GitHub’s free plan.

The model that fuels Code Assist for Individuals boasts a 128,000-token context window, a significant advantage as it exceeds the capacity offered by competitors by over four times. This enhanced capability allows the model to process larger segments of code in a single prompt and manage more complex codebases effectively.

Starting Tuesday, developers can register for the free public preview of Gemini Code Assist for Individuals.

As for Gemini Code Assist for GitHub, it automates the scanning of pull requests to identify bugs, while also making additional potentially helpful suggestions.

These two tools mark Google’s intensified efforts to compete against Microsoft and its subsidiary GitHub in the developer tools arena. Seven months prior, Google appointed Ryan Salva, the former head of the GitHub Copilot team, to lead its initiatives in developer tooling.

By providing a free AI coding assistant with generous usage limits, Google aims to attract early-career developers to Code Assist, according to Salva’s remarks to TechCrunch. He anticipates that a portion of these developers will eventually upgrade to an enterprise Code Assist plan, which would be the company’s revenue stream.

Google has been offering Gemini Code Assist to businesses for approximately a year. In December, the company announced plans for the AI coding assistant to soon incorporate features compatible with third-party tools from GitLab, GitHub, and Google Docs. The enterprise versions of Code Assist include enhanced functionalities such as audit logs, integration with other Google Cloud services, and customization for private repositories.
