As the U.S. presidential election approaches, Google is enhancing the safety measures across its generative AI platforms. The tech giant has already outlined measures to limit Gemini search inquiries concerning the election, and is now extending these precautions to its wider range of generative AI tools.
These additional protections will affect Search AI Summaries, AI-generated condensations on YouTube for Live Chat, Gems, and image creation tools within Gemini. These AI functionalities will be programmed to avoid engaging with content connected to electoral matters.
Recognizing the nascent stage of generative AI and its vulnerability to errors, Google aims to curtail the spread of false information regarding the election by enforcing these limitations.
“In the realm of pivotal national and statewide elections, it’s crucial for our users to receive accurate, timely data regarding aspects like the roster of candidates, how to vote, and the outcomes of elections. Given the learning curve of this nascent technology and the pace at which news evolves, errors are possible,” Google’s Vice President of Trust and Safety, Laurie Richardson, emphasized in a blog post.
The threat of misinformation, a major concern during the 2020 presidential race, is likely to be exacerbated by the proliferation of generative AI in the 2024 election cycle. Google’s recently announced measures aim to proactively counteract this issue.
Additionally, Google Search will introduce a feature, akin to previous elections, to aid Americans in finding vital voting registration information.
YouTube plans to roll out new functionalities to guide users towards authoritative sources on election candidates and their respective parties. As election day draws closer, the platform will feature prompts guiding users on voting procedures and locations.
Google Play is contributing to the effort by introducing a new badge that identifies apps from official governmental sources, making it easier for users to access trustworthy election information.
