Google is set to host its most significant annual developer conference, Google I/O 2025, on May 20 and 21. The event will feature key announcements from CEO Sundar Pichai, DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, and leaders from Search, Cloud, and Android divisions, aiming to showcase the latest updates across Google’s extensive product range.
This year’s focus will prominently centre on artificial intelligence (AI), particularly Google’s advanced Gemini AI models. Pichai and Hassabis aspire to establish a competitive edge over rivals like OpenAI, xAI, and Anthropic. There will also be insights into DeepMind’s initiatives, notably Project Astra, a multimodal AI system that was previously hinted at during the last conference, including smart glasses powered by the project.
A recurring theme at this event will be the integration of AI across Google’s offerings. Elizabeth Reid, head of Search, will discuss the transformative impacts of generative AI on searching online. Other executives are slated to present sessions on various topics, including the application of AI in scientific research, the use of AI agents within applications, and how Waymo’s autonomous vehicles utilise AI for navigation.
The keynote session will commence at 10 a.m. PT on May 20, hosted at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View. Attendees can access a livestream of the keynote and other discussions throughout the day, such as updates on Android, Chrome, and Google Cloud. A special developer keynote will follow at 1:30 p.m. PT, focusing on more technical aspects of Google’s offerings.
Additionally, Hassabis is scheduled for a discussion with Alex Kantrowitz of the Big Technology Podcast regarding the future of DeepMind’s AI and its societal implications at 3:30 p.m. PT. While some sessions will not be available for livestreaming, TechCrunch will be on-site to report on the most important announcements.
Notably, prior to Google I/O 2025, “The Android Show” will take place on May 14 at 10 a.m. PT, streaming details and new Android developments ahead of the main event. Overall, anticipation is building for Google I/O 2025, expected to be a major platform for the latest advancements in AI and technology.
