From the Fairways to the Fields: Emerging Startups Aim to Enhance Golf and Hunting Experiences

by admin

The pandemic ushered in a heightened popularity for outdoor sports ranging from golf to pickleball. This surge in outdoor pursuits did not fade as other pandemic-era trends did, maintaining its grip on public interest.

By the close of 2023, engagement in outdoor activities reached an unprecedented high with 175.8 million individuals, or 57% of Americans aged six and older, getting involved, as reported by the Outdoor Industry Association.

However, this increased interest also highlighted the industry’s need for innovation. From bookings made via telephone to transactions in cash and an equipment market monopolized by longstanding brands, there existed ample opportunities for entrepreneurial ventures.

Recent years have witnessed entrepreneurs establishing SaaS software for fishing and hunting expeditions. Innovators have introduced AI-driven services to schedule golf tee times and startups like the one backed by Kevin Durant have emerged to assist users in finding pickleball courts. The innovation list stretches on.

Venture capitalists have shown significant interest as well. In 2019, sports tech ventures attracted $48.60 million across 25 companies, per PitchBook data. The investment soared to $949.26 million for 53 entities in 2021, and despite the investment dip to $189.71 million for 43 companies in 2023, the figure still represents a 290% jump from the investments prior to the pandemic.

Digital Transformation

Benjamin Lazarov, CEO and co-founder of AnyCreek, shared with TechCrunch his initial disbelief at venturing into his startup creation before the pandemic. The idea sparked when he struggled to book a hunting guide via phone in Vermont in 2022, which seemed outmoded in the digitally-advanced COVID-19 era. This experience compelled him to depart from his growth director role at Compass to start AnyCreek.

Lazarov believes that the pandemic significantly hastened the technology adoption curve, with a new wave of technology-first guides managing their operations online.

Mallard Bay, a Texas enterprise, revolutionized the way fishing and hunting guides are accessed online. Since its 2019 inception, the platform grew substantially post-lockdowns, as noted by co-founder and CEO Logan Meaux to TechCrunch.

Similarly, the founding of Loop Golf was motivated by the difficulty in securing golf course tee times due to the influx of new golf enthusiasts, as recounted by co-founder and CEO Matthew Holden to TechCrunch.

Shifting Behaviors

The mandatory shift online adjusted consumer expectations towards interacting digitally with businesses, according to Lazarov. The reluctance to revert to pre-pandemic methods, like telephone bookings, highlights a broader demand for technological integration into the recreational sector.

Scott Holloway of Starting Line, an investor in AnyCreek, highlighted a generational shift towards valuing experiences over physical goods, a trend corroborated by numerous surveys over the past decade. Companies that harness technology to facilitate these experiences are well-placed to succeed.

The introduction of startups catering to the demand for modern, stylish sporting gear further underscores this trend. Ventures like Eastside Golf and Malbon Golf aim to provide a fresh take for the new generation of golf enthusiasts unwilling to emulate the classic Arnold Palmer look. Similar innovations can be seen with Nettie and Recess, reimagining pickleball equipment.

Pioneers like Hipcamp and AutoCamp demonstrated consumer demand for innovation in outdoor recreation early on. More than a decade later, immense potential remains for ventures willing to modernize this space. Numerous areas, from equipment rentals to outdoor activity services, are ripe for technological advancement.

Holloway sees a vast market potential, referencing Marc Andreessen’s assertion that “software is eating the world.” Yet, outdoor recreation remains a largely untapped market ripe for digital disruption, driven by consumer demand and presenting a massive opportunity for innovative entrepreneurs.
