FOSSA, an Open-Source Startup, Acquires StackShare, the Go-To Platform for 1.5 Million Developers

TechCrunch reports that FOSSA, an open-source compliance and security company, has successfully acquired StackShare, a platform highly regarded by developers for community engagement.

StackShare has gained recognition as a preferred site for developers who wish to communicate, monitor, and disclose the assortment of tools they deploy for application development. This includes discussions from the selection of JavaScript frameworks for the frontend to the choice of cloud services for particular operations.

Yonas Beshawred, the entrepreneurial force behind StackShare, disclosed to TechCrunch his initial struggles with technology selections for web development. He noted, “Identifying the right technology stack was a common hurdle for developers, and I saw a unified, structured online community as the ideal remedy to facilitate these discussions.”

Prior to acquisition, StackShare had attracted $12 million in investments from entities like Precursor Ventures, Headline, and Gold House Ventures. Beshawred highlighted the platform’s reach, with registration from over 1.5 million developers, presence of more than 50,000 company profiles, 800,000 active users monthly, and roughly 30 enterprise clients. Though the financial terms were kept private, StackShare’s valuation was approximated at $20 million by Pitchbook.

FOSSA, valued at above $100 million, stands out as a leader in the software compliance and security domain, offering comprehensive governance over external code use. Originating from a need to simplify open-source license management for developers, FOSSA’s integration with StackShare is anticipated to broaden the reach of its security and governance solutions across a more extensive developer toolset, as per Beshawred.

“The merger of two startups, each with significant accomplishments in the community and enterprise segments, marks a pivotal moment for the developer tool industry,” Beshawred mentioned.

This acquisition evolved from a late last year partnership titled The Tech Stack File, enabling developers to view all technologies incorporated in a codebase. The collaboration, initially focusing on open-source packages, unveiled a greater potential, according to Beshawred.

FOSSA’s CEO, Kevin Wang, explained the acquisition’s motivation as fulfilling the needs for enhanced visibility and management of developer tools within companies. “The complexity of the software supply chain demands efficient management and tracking of developer tools at scale, and StackShare’s community-driven insights are incredibly beneficial for companies aiming to secure their developer ecosystems,” he stated.

Post-acquisition, Beshawred will assume the role of head of product at FOSSA, but StackShare’s team will not join him. Despite not disclosing the deal’s terms, Beshawred expressed satisfaction from both parties involved.

Reflecting on the acquisition journey, Beshawred equated it to raising funds, emphasizing the importance of a compelling narrative, solid metrics, and a strong team. He acknowledged the guidance from fellow entrepreneurs and underscored the backing from the Black community, extending gratitude towards influential figures like Aston Motes, Baron Davis, and Charles Hudson for their initial support, especially highlighting the significance of their support as a Black founder in technology.

“This success not only serves as a milestone but also underlines the potential for Black entrepreneurs in the developer and enterprise sector,” he remarked, born from solving a critical and valuable problem that resonated with over 40 million developers. “It provides a beacon for Black individuals, potentially inspiring them to explore and innovate within this niche.”
