The spotlight on domestic manufacturing in the US has grown significantly, yet Turner Caldwell, a former Tesla executive, believes there is a critical oversight regarding the foundational minerals and metals crucial to the supply chain. In response to this gap, he established Mariana Minerals in 2024, aiming to create a modern mining and refining operation focused on increasing the availability of refined metals. His ambitious vision incorporates extensive automation into mining processes.
Recently, Mariana Minerals formed a partnership with Pronto, a startup renowned for its autonomous systems designed for haulage trucks and off-road vehicles within construction and mining environments. This collaboration marks Pronto’s first engagement since being acquired by Atoms, a robotics initiative led by Uber co-founder Travis Kalanick, who is reuniting with influential figures in self-driving technology.
The partnership will introduce autonomous trucks to Copper One, a revived copper mine in Utah recently acquired by Mariana. While financial details remain undisclosed, this innovative integration extends beyond logistics. The autonomous systems from Pronto will merge with Mariana’s proprietary software, “MineOS,” enabling the trucks to be dispatched and navigate without human intervention.
Caldwell envisions a future where mines operate like tech companies, leveraging sophisticated software and automation to maximise efficiency. He compares the current landscape of Western mining companies to traditional manufacturing giants like Ford and GM before the rise of disruptive innovations. In his perspective, the reluctance of existing mining operations to adopt advanced technologies is hindering productivity and efficiency.

He emphasises that owning the mine is integral to refining his software and harnessing high-quality data, thereby enhancing decision-making processes over time. Drawing parallels to AI advancements, he believes that comprehensive data analysis will allow for insights that may currently elude human operators.
Despite the emphasis on automation, Caldwell asserts that his approach will not eliminate jobs. Instead, he believes the automation of processes will facilitate more active mining operations, thereby creating new employment opportunities. His objective is to enhance productivity within a constrained labour market rather than simply reducing labour costs.
