Fivetran Purchases Census to Evolve into a Comprehensive Data Movement Platform

by admin

After operating for almost 13 years, Fivetran is poised to enhance its offerings with a comprehensive data movement solution following its recent acquisition of Census, a platform specialising in reverse extract, transform, and load (ETL) processes. This strategic move was unveiled on Thursday, with Census known for enabling businesses to shift data from databases into operational tools. Since its inception in 2018, Census has garnered over $80 million in venture capital from prominent investors such as Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, and Tiger Global.

While the financial terms of the acquisition remain undisclosed, Census was valued at approximately $630 million in 2022. With the completion of this deal, the entire Census workforce is set to join Fivetran, and the Census brand will gradually be integrated into Fivetran’s platform.

George Fraser, Fivetran’s co-founder and CEO, explained to TechCrunch that the acquisition aligns with long-standing customer requests for a reverse ETL solution. Initially, Fivetran considered developing its own solution and even designed a prototype. However, the team eventually recognised the advantages of acquiring a company that had already established an efficient solution.

Fraser noted that the technical aspects of these services are markedly different, necessitating unique problem-solving approaches. Thus, acquiring Census was a logical decision, given the shared customer base and aesthetic similarities between the two platforms.

Fraser commented, “Customers attracted to Fivetran, as opposed to alternatives like Informatica or creating their own connectors, are likely to appreciate Census as well.” The alignment in product philosophy underscores the potential for synergy between the two companies.

The historical ties between the founding teams of Fivetran and Census also played a significant role in this acquisition. Fraser and his co-founder Taylor Brown met the Census team during Y Combinator’s 2013 winter session. Both groups have maintained a connection over the years, having discussed Census as a concept even before its establishment.

Now, nearly a decade later, Fivetran is set to bring these related services together under one umbrella. Fraser remarked on the synergy he and Brown identified back at the start of Census, suggesting that the eventual acquisition seemed almost predestined.

This acquisition represents a significant milestone for Fivetran, positioning it to deliver a unified and efficient data management solution. By integrating Census, Fivetran not only meets customer demand but also reinforces its commitment to evolving in the dynamic landscape of data technology.
