Fei-Fei Li’s Latest AI Venture Gains $100M Investment from NEA, Surpassing $1B Valuation

Under the radar, World Labs, established by the esteemed Stanford University AI expert Fei Fei Li, has successfully secured two financing rounds within a span of two months, as indicated by various sources. The most recent funding round was spearheaded by NEA, catapulting the company’s value to the unicorn status with a valuation exceeding $1 billion, as uncovered by TechCrunch through conversations with informed individuals. This round, amounting to $100 million, was previously mentioned in a July Financial Times article.

Compared to its initial financing round in April, which estimated World Labs’ worth at $200 million, this marks a substantial leap in the company’s valuation, a source reveals. The first investment round saw contributions from Andreessen Horowitz and Radical Ventures, a Canadian entity where Li holds the position of a scientific partner, as Reuters reported in May. Neither Fei Fei Li nor NEA have commented on these developments.

Established in April, World Labs’ meteoric rise to unicorn status within just four months underscores the tech investment world’s ongoing enthusiasm for AI ventures led by distinguished figures in the field, regardless of the startups’ track records.

The project Li is embarking upon is recognized for its complexity and potential significance in the AI-centric future that Silicon Valley is eagerly forging. World Labs is focused on developing AI solutions capable of understanding and replicating the three-dimensional structure of objects and environments in the physical world, thus creating precise digital twins without the necessity for intensive data acquisition.

Referred to as the “Godmother of AI,” Li has publicly shared insights into how machines might acquire “spatial intelligence” akin to humans during a TED talk she gave earlier this year.

According to one investor familiar with the endeavors of World Labs, “The world possesses a scant amount of three-dimensional data.” They elaborated on the challenges faced by autonomous vehicle firms, which accumulate this kind of data through extensive driving, and noted the high costs and expansive effort required to gather such data for other uses like robotic baristas.

The investor suggested that the AI models being developed by World Labs hold promise for use in gaming and robotics.
Li, renowned for her pioneering work with the ImageNet database – a project that transformed computer vision technology, is presently on a sabbatical until December 2025 from her position as the co-director of Stanford’s Human-Centered AI Institute.
