Federal immigration officers have begun appearing at various U.S. airports as part of an initiative declared by the Trump administration to assign ICE agents to assist with growing security lines stemming from the ongoing partial government shutdown that commenced on February 14. The shutdown has severely impacted airport operations, with long queues at pre-gate security checkpoints typically managed by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) staff. Many TSA employees, along with others under the Department of Homeland Security, are working without pay due to Congress’s inability to secure new funding.

Travelers have reported wait times stretching several hours, leading to heightened frustrations. In response, Tom Homan, the official overseeing border security, announced the deployment of ICE agents to airports facing the longest delays, although specifics of the implementation plan are still being finalised.

The deployment has not come without criticism. Opponents argue that integrating ICE presence at airports could exacerbate tensions among flyers, especially following allegations of misconduct by agents, including the fatal incidents involving U.S. citizens earlier this year, which has prompted calls for reform from Democratic lawmakers.

Eyewitness accounts confirmed that ICE agents were seen making at least one arrest at San Francisco International Airport. A video circulated on social media showed plain-clothed officers detaining an individual and a child, sparking public concern. Jason Sweeney, an ICE spokesperson, clarified that the arrest occurred prior to the official deployment of agents intended to alleviate TSA pressures.

Reports indicate that ICE agents have also been sighted at major airports including Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta, Newark, New Orleans, and JFK in New York, with additional sightings reported in cities such as Chicago, Cleveland, Houston, Phoenix, and San Juan.

ICE is known for employing various surveillance techniques, including facial recognition technology and access to location data from mobile devices to track individuals. This scrutiny has added to the unease surrounding their presence in the airport environment.

As travellers navigate these changes, experiences with ICE agents alongside, or in lieu of, TSA staff have become a topic of concern and discussion.
