The expiration deadlines imposed by WeTransfer have become a significant inconvenience for its users, notably those in creative fields. The issue arises when recipients forget to download their files immediately upon receiving the link or email, only to remember after the link has expired, necessitating a request for it to be sent again — a process that can be irritating for all involved.
Acknowledging this problem, the company now seems to be offering a solution by introducing the ability to adjust file expiration dates on its mobile app, through a new feature labeled “Save for Now.” Yet, this solution is not complete.
On Tuesday, an ambiguous statement was made by WeTransfer on its X account, indicating that users can postpone the expiration date by up to 30 days on its mobile app, while also declaring “WeTransfer links will no longer expire.” This announcement was subsequently amended to clarify that the extension period depends on the user’s subscription plan, and without using the save option, links would still expire as before.
The reception to WeTransfer’s announcement was mixed, with criticism from some users who initially thought that the service was eliminating the concept of link expiration entirely — a misunderstanding, as users still need to actively use the new feature to prevent expiration.
To combat this, WeTransfer now allows users to save links to a dedicated folder within its mobile app using the “Save for Now” feature, marked by a bookmark icon.
This function is particularly handy for those moments when immediate file download isn’t possible but future access is needed, bypassing the need to sift through emails later.
Our own experiments revealed that with a standard account, the app permits extending the expiration of a link by up to seven days, a significant increase from the default three-day limit following the link’s creation.
Recently, WeTransfer found a new home under the wing of Italy’s Bending Spoons, joining a collection of established applications like Evernote and Meetup. At the acquisition announcement, WeTransfer’s CEO Alexandar Vassilev reported that over the past ten years, the file-sharing platform has cultivated a user base of 600,000 subscribers and 80 million monthly active users.
