A new initiative is emerging in the U.S. aimed at addressing critical challenges in the healthcare sector. Mary Minno, a former Google product manager and investor, has unveiled a dual program: the Treehub residency and the AI Health Fund. These initiatives focus on supporting startups at the juncture of healthcare and artificial intelligence (AI). The AI Health Fund serves as the venture arm of Treehub, offering financial backing to innovative healthcare ventures.
The Treehub residency spans six months, with the first half concentrating on helping founders align their products with market needs, while the latter half focuses on guiding their businesses towards growth—whether that involves securing substantial funding or integrating into healthcare systems.
Minno’s motivation for this initiative stemmed from personal experiences and observations. After the birth of her second child and a family member’s cancer diagnosis, she encountered significant obstacles in accessing timely and effective healthcare. This prompted her to seek solutions that challenge conventional practices within the healthcare system.
Together with her friend Esther Wojcicki, a noted educator and mother of prominent figures in the tech industry, Minno recognised the need for more supportive structures for academic researchers aiming to commercialise their findings. The duo aims to bridge the gap between academic research and viable business ventures by pairing operators with research-focused entrepreneurs.
To establish the AI Health Fund, Minno collaborated with Stanford University’s biomedical data science department, enabling them to provide initial investment checks ranging from $50,000 to $150,000. So far, the fund, which aims to raise $10 million, has secured $1.5 million in its first close, bolstered by contributions from friends and family, as well as a significant investment from billionaire venture capitalist Tim Draper.
The program has already begun supporting twelve companies, including notable projects like Clair Health, which focuses on women’s health, and a new venture addressing pediatric autism. Minno views the residency program as an experimental framework aimed at assisting founders in their early stages, sometimes even before formal company establishment, providing a comprehensive support system.
Unlike traditional accelerators, Treehub does not host a demo day, recognising that companies evolve at varying paces. The programme instead prioritises tailored support for each startup, equipping them to navigate challenges effectively.
Minno’s vision is ambitious: to refine the residency model based on its initial run and potentially expand it nationwide after a few cycles. She emphasises the importance of making each collaborating company successful, aiming for a tenfold growth impact in the long run.
