Epic Games and Spotify are challenging Apple’s revised App Store regulations by submitting updated app versions that were previously prohibited. This move could potentially facilitate Fortnite’s return to the App Store, following its removal in 2020 when Epic introduced direct payment options within the game, prompting a legal confrontation with Apple over antitrust issues.
While Epic Games seeks reinstatement of Fortnite, Spotify aims to enhance its offering by allowing users to purchase individual audiobooks directly and enabling Premium subscribers to acquire extra listening hours beyond the standard 15-hour monthly limit. This update from Spotify follows Apple’s recent approval of Amazon’s Kindle app, which now features a “Buy Book” button, and aligns with Spotify’s previous win that allows U.S. users to view subscription pricing within the app.
These developments signal that more apps may soon exploit the new App Store guidelines. For large tech firms like Epic and Spotify, these changes are primarily about improving profitability. However, smaller developers stand to gain significantly, as these new policies encourage the emergence of varied business models that could be crucial for their survival in the competitive landscape.
