An identified glitch is causing iPhones and iPads to unexpectedly malfunction momentarily. Triggering this glitch requires merely four specific characters.
A security analyst on Wednesday uncovered that inputting “::” can lead to a malfunction within the Apple mobile operating system’s interface, known as Springboard, leading to a crash.
This phenomenon was confirmed by TechCrunch, who found that entering these characters into the Search bar within the Settings app or by swiping to the extreme right on the home screen to access the App Library search function causes Springboard to crash.
According to various sources, simply inserting “::” followed by any additional character can activate the glitch. This results in a temporary crash of Springboard, subsequently redirecting the user to the lock screen. During other tests, the malfunction caused the screen to turn black briefly.
Apple has not provided a comment on this issue as of now.
Experts consulting with TechCrunch have indicated that the glitch does not pose a security threat.
“This is not a case of a security flaw,” stated Ryan Stortz, a specialist in iOS security who examined the glitch. Patrick Wardle, an iOS research expert and the founder of the security firm DoubleYou, concurred with this assessment.
Currently, there is no indication that the glitch can be triggered by anyone other than the owner of an iOS device through manual input of the characters, distinguishing it from a 2020 bug that led the Twitter application to crash upon viewing a tweet containing a specific set of characters.
