Starbase, the company town developed by Elon Musk’s SpaceX in South Texas, is establishing its own police department. The city commission has approved an ordinance to create this municipal police force, pending confirmation from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). The new department will be overseen by an elected chief and is expected to employ eight officers, with plans for it to become operational in a matter of months.
Kent Myers, the city administrator, highlighted the importance of safeguarding the numerous assets associated with SpaceX’s operations in Starbase, suggesting that the police department will be vital in providing this protection. It remains unclear whether Starbase has yet submitted its application to TCOLE, and neither the city nor TCOLE has commented on the matter. Reports indicate that Starbase has engaged security firm Vision Quest Solutions to assist in the establishment of the department.
Starbase is primarily known for the manufacturing and testing of SpaceX’s Starship rocket prototypes. Though it currently has a population of only a few hundred residents—most of whom are affiliated with SpaceX—it is situated far from the nearest town, Brownsville, which is approximately 10 miles away but can take a considerable amount of time to reach due to travel conditions.
The formation of a police department adds to the public services that have recently been introduced in Starbase since its incorporation as a city last year. In October, a group of SpaceX employees living in Starbase initiated a volunteer fire department, and other services such as a fire marshal and building inspections have also been established.
Previously, Starbase attempted to manage law enforcement by contracting the Cameron County sheriff’s office through a $3.5 million, five-year contract intended to ensure that two deputies would patrol the area at all times, with a total of eight deputies assigned. Additionally, an agreement was made for Starbase to use the county jail, with commitments for daily payments per inmate and coverage of extra costs like medical care.
However, the arrangement has not proved successful. Myers commented on the challenges faced in recruiting deputies through the county, leading to the decision to pursue an independent police force. This shift appears to stem from issues associated with the lack of civil service protections that the previous contract with the sheriff’s office entailed.
As Starbase continues to grow and evolve, establishing its own police department reflects an effort to enhance community safety and provide dedicated services tailored to its unique needs amid the operations of SpaceX.
