Tesla CEO Elon Musk has indicated he may continue his association with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) throughout the remainder of President Donald Trump’s second term, despite increasing pressure to step back from political engagements.
During a recent Tesla earnings call, Musk announced plans to scale down his involvement with DOGE to just a couple of days each week starting next month, contingent on the President’s wishes and the perceived utility of his role. This decision follows Tesla’s disclosure in a shareholder letter expressing that “political sentiment” is negatively affecting its sales—a situation compounded by rising competition and the fallout from Trump’s tariffs. These factors have led to a staggering 71% decrease in profits compared to the same quarter the previous year.
Musk’s remarks coincided with warnings from a major market supporter who suggested Tesla is facing a “code red” scenario, urging the CEO to limit his government duties. The negative perception of Musk’s activities, particularly his efforts to overhaul government agencies—alluded to as throwing them “into the wood chipper”—has sparked global protests against him and his company.
In a controversial statement during the call, Musk suggested that these protests were “paid for,” offering no supporting evidence. He claimed that protestors were motivated by “fraudulent money” or waste, a claim met with scepticism and a lack of justification.
Musk proclaimed that the foundational efforts he invested in establishing DOGE have largely concluded, which would facilitate his reduction in active involvement. As a “special government employee,” he is supposed to limit his government work to 130 days within a given year, although specifics about his future role remain unclear. The White House has yet to provide a response regarding Musk’s ongoing position.
Overall, the situation highlights the tension between Musk’s political involvement and Tesla’s business performance, with significant implications for the company as it navigates challenges within a competitive landscape.
