Duolingo Unveils 148 AI-Generated Courses Following Announcement to Replace Contractors with Artificial Intelligence

by admin

Duolingo has unveiled an impressive expansion of its offerings, introducing 148 new language courses developed through generative AI technology, according to a recent announcement. This significant growth comes amid criticism the company has faced for its decision to replace human contractors with AI, as part of its strategy to become an “AI-first” organisation.

This latest update doubles Duolingo’s existing course range, marking the most substantial content expansion in the company’s history. Luis von Ahn, co-founder and CEO of Duolingo, highlighted the rapid development capabilities brought about by generative AI, stating that the launch of nearly 150 new courses in less than a year contrasts starkly with the 12 years it took to craft the first 100 courses. He described this evolution as a prime example of how AI can enhance learning experiences, attributing the unprecedented speed and quality of this expansion to investments in AI and automation.

Historically, creating a single course on Duolingo would require considerable time and resources. Now, the integration of generative AI facilitates the launch of multiple courses within a much shorter timeframe. However, while the company celebrates these technological advancements, it faces backlash from its users. Many are disillusioned by Duolingo’s plan to increasingly rely on AI, fearing it will negatively affect the quality of the app and lead to job losses for workers.

In an internal communication, von Ahn indicated that the transition to an AI-centric model would involve gradually eliminating contractor roles in favour of AI solutions where possible. He asserted that while AI serves as a productivity enhancer, it is also crucial for scaling educational content rapidly, a necessity in meeting the needs of its learners.

Critics have taken to social media to express dissatisfaction, with some users arguing that reliance on AI has degraded the app’s quality, leading to inaccurate content. There are reports of users deleting the app and encouraging others to do the same in protest of these changes.

The newly launched language courses are largely targeted at beginners, featuring innovative elements like Stories to aid reading comprehension and DuoRadio to enhance listening skills. Duolingo has indicated that advanced content will be released in subsequent months to further enrich its educational offerings. Despite the potential benefits of generative AI, the company faces a complex challenge balancing innovation and user satisfaction in this evolving educational landscape.
