The inaugural week of the Meta antitrust trial has unveiled insights into how the company, previously known as Facebook, perceived the competitive threat from Instagram during the early 2010s. The U.S. government has accused Meta of breaching competition laws through its acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp, which allegedly undermined the competitive landscape by reinforcing Facebook’s monopolistic practices. Should the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) succeed in its case, Meta may be compelled to divest its Instagram and WhatsApp businesses.

During the trial, the FTC presented significant evidence, highlighting internal communications among Facebook executives that expressed concern over Instagram’s rapid ascent in the social media space. These internal emails reveal a clear acknowledgment of the potential danger Instagram posed as its user base expanded. In one email, Mark Zuckerberg noted Instagram’s impressive growth, warning that if the app continued to flourish, it could overshadow Facebook’s offerings.

Discussions among Facebook leadership included strategies ranging from acquiring Instagram to stifling its growth. Executives considered either imitating Instagram’s features or acquiring the app only to halt its development, thereby limiting its competitive potential. This approach underscores the aggressive tactics that have characterized Meta’s trajectory toward becoming a dominant force in social networking.

The trial has showcased various highlights from these communications. Notably, Zuckerberg expressed concern in early 2011 over Instagram’s accelerating user engagement, stating, “We need to track this closely,” while contemplating the implications of Dropbox entering the photo-sharing market. By September of that year, he was increasingly worried about the dual threat from Instagram’s quick rise and the possibility of a Google acquisition.

Statements from other executives also reflected the urgency with which Facebook approached the Instagram issue. Chief Product Officer Chris Cox pointed out the necessity to streamline Facebook’s mobile experience and introduced a new mobile photo app in reaction to Instagram’s success. In early 2012, Zuckerberg raised the notion of potentially acquiring Instagram for approximately $500 million, acknowledging its unique attributes that appealed to users focused on high-quality photo sharing.

Zuckerberg’s emails laid bare a strategy of acquiring promising competitors while simultaneously stunting their growth to fortify Facebook’s market position. Suggestions included maintaining Instagram’s operations while diverting development resources to enhance Facebook’s existing products, thus avoiding backlash from users and preventing market vacuums.

This multi-pronged strategy of either acquiring or undermining competitors is pivotal to the government’s case that Meta cultivated a monopoly by manoeuvring to contain threats to its dominance in social media. The unfolding trial will further explore these revelations and their implications for Meta’s future.
