Deutsche Telekom and Perplexity Unveil Innovative ‘AI Phone’ Priced Below $1,000

At this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, it was only a matter of time before a carrier would reveal a significant partnership with a leading AI firm to develop a smartphone. Deutsche Telekom (DT) has taken the lead, announcing the creation of an “AI Phone,” an affordable smartphone crafted in collaboration with Perplexity, Picsart, and others, alongside a new AI assistant application dubbed “Magenta AI.”

The unveiling of this device is expected in the latter half of the year, with sales projected to begin in 2026, priced under $1,000. Initially, the focus will be on the European market, as confirmed by a spokesperson to TechCrunch.

During a press conference on Monday, Claudia Nemat, a member of the DT board responsible for technology and innovation, stated, “We are evolving into an AI company.” While she clarified that DT is not creating foundational large language models, she emphasized their focus on developing AI agents.

Perplexity, a Silicon Valley startup currently valued at approximately $9 billion, is recognized as a pivotal player in this phone’s development. This involvement indicates how the company, well-known for its generative AI search engine, is shifting its focus to more “proactive” offerings.

“Perplexity is evolving from being merely an answer provider to becoming an action-oriented platform,” stated Aravind Srinivas, co-founder and CEO of Perplexity, during the event. “It will autonomously handle tasks for you beyond just answering queries, such as booking flights, making reservations, sending emails, transmitting messages, initiating calls, and setting smart reminders.”

Although this marks Perplexity’s initial collaboration with a carrier to create an AI-interface for a smartphone, it has prior experience with assistants, having launched an Android assistant earlier this year that may serve as a foundation for the upcoming “AI Phone.”

This announcement is part of an ongoing narrative within the telecom sector. For years, telecom companies—billions invested and all—have been searching for strategies to better compete against tech giants.

Their targets are primarily Apple and Google, which have launched operating systems and devices that significantly reduce telecom firms’ influence when it comes to monetizing applications and maintaining customer relations. Over the years, we’ve observed attempts to collaborate with companies like Mozilla to create carrier-centric devices aimed at outpacing these tech leaders (notably, the Firephone fell flat). There were also extensive collaborations with Facebook, with Meta (formerly Facebook) now redirecting its focus away from such partnerships.

The fast-paced, disruptive approach typical of tech startups is not largely characteristic of telecoms. Since solidifying their partnership in April 2024, DT and Perplexity have gradually been working together, with DT first hinting at the “AI Phone” concept at last year’s MWC event.

Nemat did not delve into specifics regarding the hardware, including technical specifications, nor did she disclose which company is manufacturing the device or the operating system it will utilize (initial impressions suggest it will run a version of Android). DT has indicated that more information in this regard will be available later this year.

Nemat emphasized that the phone will integrate AI features, allowing users to experience full capabilities, including “AI on your lock screen.”

Additional services integrated into the device will feature AI contributions from Google Cloud, ElevenLabs, and Picsart, as per DT’s announcement.

Magenta AI, DT’s app-based assistant, will also be available for users who wish to install it on their own Android or iOS devices, provided they are among DT’s 300 million customer base, according to Nemat.

Aligning itself with the current trend of AI technologies—a dominant theme at this year’s MWC—DT’s AI Phone represents a strategic move to establish a firmer grip on consumer markets while offering an application for those who may not opt for the device itself.

For Perplexity, this collaboration positions the startup not just against well-funded competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic, but also against major tech firms such as Google, which has integrated its Gemini AI into its core search functionalities. By shifting towards “action” capabilities in partnership with a telecom provider, Perplexity creates a distinct competitive advantage, at least for the present.

The partnership showcases Perplexity’s commitment to advancing the next stage of AI-driven user experiences.

“Earlier, users had to manage these tasks independently, navigating different applications. Soon, these processes will become streamlined, allowing users to concentrate their efforts on solving problems,” Srinivas noted. “We are shifting into a new era where AI will move from simply being reactive, prompting user input, to being an inherent feature on your phone—always at the ready to assist proactively.”

The ability of DT and Perplexity to navigate the challenging smartphone market—dominated by a handful of major players—remains uncertain, especially as even industry titans like LG have retreated from the scene.

Nevertheless, this initiative highlights the current allure of AI, illustrating how even traditional companies perceive it as a potential solution, while innovative startups search for sustainable advantages amid intense competition.
