Tracy Chou, the founder of Block Party, announced on Wednesday that her company has been acquired by DeleteMe, a service specialising in the removal of personal data from the internet. Chou, a software engineer and advocate for diversity, launched Block Party in 2018 to address the issue of targeted harassment on Twitter, drawing from her own negative experiences on the platform.
In 2022, Chou secured a $4.8 million seed round to expand Block Party’s capabilities to other social media networks. This move proved timely as Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter led to increased charges for API access, forcing Block Party to adapt quickly and create tools for additional platforms. The company transitioned into a browser extension designed to “deep clean” social media accounts, integrating with a variety of platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Venmo, Facebook, and X.
Reflecting on her journey, Chou shared in a blog post that her past activism made her vulnerable to online harassment, prompting her to seek solutions for protecting personal information. After discovering DeleteMe, which helps individuals remove their data from search sites and brokers, she realised no similar tool existed to safeguard social media presence. This gap spurred the creation of Block Party, making the acquisition by DeleteMe a natural progression in her mission.
Chou also noted that the combination of the two services would offer users a more streamlined solution for their online safety, eliminating the need for consumers and enterprise clients to juggle multiple services. Current Block Party users can expect no immediate changes, but further integration with DeleteMe will be shared as it develops.
Chou concluded by emphasising the need for a balance between having a voice online and ensuring personal safety. Despite the details of the acquisition remaining undisclosed, the merger reflects a significant step toward enhancing online safety and privacy for users.
As the internet continues to pose challenges for safety and equity, Chou maintains her belief that it can evolve into a more secure and empowering environment.
