Databricks Acquires Open-Source Database Startup Neon for $1 Billion

by admin

Databricks, a prominent player in the data analytics space, has announced its decision to acquire Neon, a startup that focuses on creating an open-source alternative to AWS Aurora Postgres, for approximately $1 billion. This acquisition aims to merge Neon’s innovative serverless relational database management system with Databricks’ data intelligence services, enhancing the efficiency of deploying AI agents for their customers.

Founded in 2021 by CEO Nikita Shamgunov and his team, Neon has developed a managed cloud-based database platform that caters to developers with both free and pay-as-you-go options. This platform allows users to clone database instances and simulate changes prior to full deployment, while automatically scaling resources based on demand. Notably, it features branching capabilities for isolated development/testing databases and point-in-time recovery functionalities.

Databricks believes that these features are particularly valuable for AI workloads, which, while executing tasks more rapidly than human developers, still necessitate oversight to mitigate potential errors. Recent data indicates that an impressive 80% of the databases created on Neon are generated automatically by AI agents rather than manual input.

Ali Ghodsi, co-founder and CEO of Databricks, emphasised the shift towards AI-native applications that drive the need for databases with advanced capabilities. He noted the significant role that Neon’s technology will play in meeting the speed and economic demands posed by AI-driven applications.

To date, Neon has secured $129.5 million in funding from notable investors such as Microsoft’s venture arm M12 and others. In comparison, Databricks has amassed over $19 billion in funding, closing a significant $15.3 billion round earlier this year, which valued the company at $62 billion.

Databricks has been proactive in utilising its financial resources to seize opportunities within the booming AI sector. Recent acquisitions include Tabular, a data management firm, for nearly $2 billion last year, as well as MosaicML, an open-source platform for training large language models and deploying AI tools, for $1.3 billion in 2023.

The acquisition of Neon marks a strategic move for Databricks as it continues to assert its position as a leading service provider in the development, testing, and implementation of AI models and agents.
