Conifer Secures $20 Million in Seed Funding to Develop Its ‘Drop-In’ Electric Hub Motor

by admin

A new startup named Conifer, founded by engineers with backgrounds at Lucid Motors and Apple’s electric car project, is innovating in the field of electric hub motors. This venture sets itself apart by developing motors that utilise ferrite magnets instead of rare earth elements, thereby reducing costs and minimizing supply chain vulnerabilities. Conifer claims that its unique stator design not only enhances efficiency but also provides greater power while being smaller in size.

In a timely move amid fluctuating tariffs and tensions with China, Conifer has garnered significant interest from investors, securing a $20 million seed funding round from notable deep-tech firms like True Ventures and MaC Ventures. Rohit Sharma of True Ventures has also joined Conifer’s board, further validating its potential.

As advancements in electric motor technology quicken, companies like Germany’s DeepDrive and Finland’s Donut Lab are exploring innovative paths to enhancing motor efficiency and affordability. This development occurs in a landscape where battery prices, despite ongoing reductions, are not experiencing the dramatic falls seen a decade ago.

Conifer is primarily targeting the small mobility market with its “drop-in” hub motors, which can replace existing models without requiring extensive redesigns. The company aims to support both on- and off-road vehicles, including those with two, three, or four wheels. The motors have also attracted interest from manufacturers in various sectors, such as lawn care and HVAC, and Conifer plans to begin shipping production motors later this year.

Co-founder Ankit Somani expressed a desire to address the stagnant investment in electric motor technology, contrasting it with the extensive funding seen in battery development. He identified a market opportunity, noting the insufficient focus on innovation in powertrain solutions.

Conifer’s pioneering design and manufacturing strategy aim to localize its supply chain and automate production efficiently. The company envisions a highly adaptable manufacturing process where various motor sizes can be produced on the same line. Somani asserts that Conifer’s motors are significantly less complex than car components, which should decrease risks associated with its manufacturing approach.

While many companies have explored the concept of automated microfactories, Conifer intends to take a more cautious route by gradually introducing automation for specific components like the stator. Somani’s plan is to start production in one country and expand based on local demand.

Regarding sales, he has focused on the straightforward, “drop-in” feature of Conifer’s motors, highlighting that they can lead to a 10% improvement in vehicle range simply by replacing the existing hub motor. This approach allows Conifer to engage potential clients without overwhelming them with technical complexities, ensuring a clearer path toward adoption of their innovative technology.
