Conan O’Brien Shares His Thoughts on AI in His Oscars Opening Monologue

by admin

During the 2025 Oscars held last night, comedian and late-night television host Conan O’Brien addressed the topic of AI in his opening monologue, highlighting the increasing discussions surrounding its impact on Hollywood.

“We did not utilize AI to produce this show,” O’Brien declared. His comments were a clear nod to the generative AI applied in “The Brutalist,” which took home three Oscars for Best Actor, Cinematography, and Original Score.

Last month, “The Brutalist” generated controversy due to its integration of AI. In a conversation with Red Shark News, film editor Dávid Jancsó revealed that he employed Respeecher, an AI voice synthesizer, to enhance the Hungarian dialogue of actors Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones, aiming for greater authenticity.

The utilization of AI in the film incited considerable online debate, with many arguing it should be disqualified from awards. Nevertheless, director Brady Corbet addressed these concerns, stating that AI was used solely to “refine certain vowels and letters for accuracy,” rather than to improve performances.

Additionally, “Emilia Pérez,” another Oscar-winning film, faced scrutiny for its use of Respeecher. The software was employed to expand actress Karla Sofía Gascón’s vocal range and blend her singing with that of French artist Camille, as detailed by re-recording mixer Cyril Holtz in a video interview.

The integration of AI in the film industry has sparked significant discourse in recent years, primarily due to fears of job displacement. Consequently, AI became a crucial topic during the strikes led by the Screen Actors Guild and the Writers Guild of America against major production companies in 2023.

As AI’s presence in filmmaking becomes increasingly prominent, the Motion Picture Academy has proposed the option to disclose AI usage. In light of the controversy surrounding “The Brutalist,” the Academy is reportedly contemplating making it mandatory for filmmakers to disclose any AI involvement in their submissions.
