Cheng attributes the platform’s success to continuous innovation, highlighting features like the AI game review tool introduced in 2021, which analyses players’ performances and suggests improvements. The platform’s design caters to all skill levels, particularly beginners, fostering a growing love for chess among new users.

The recent surge in chess popularity can be traced back to the COVID-19 pandemic, as many sought online activities during lockdowns. Chess.com had to enhance its infrastructure to accommodate this increased demand. The release of Netflix’s miniseries “The Queen’s Gambit” in 2020 further spurred interest, and notable events, such as a cheating scandal involving five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen, have kept chess in the spotlight.

Cheng notes a global trend in new user registrations, with around 85% coming from outside the United States. The current World Champion, Gukesh Dommaraju, represents India, highlighting the game’s international appeal.

With Cheng’s background in product and growth roles at Grammarly and Duolingo, he is aware of the rising prominence of chess, noting that high-profile players are emerging regularly. Events like online matches between Formula 1 stars, such as Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, reflect chess’s growing integration into popular culture.

Cheng expresses optimism for the future, stating that there are ample opportunities to expand the game’s reach by tapping into the existing organic interest within various communities. Chess.com aims to capitalize on these opportunities to encourage further engagement with the game.
