According to a recent report released on Thursday by venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), OpenAI’s premier AI chatbot, ChatGPT, has regained its momentum, achieving robust growth in the latter half of 2024. After taking nine months to expand from 100 million weekly active users in November 2023 to 200 million by August 2024, it has now reached a staggering 400 million users in under six months.
Following its initial release as a research preview in November 2022, ChatGPT quickly made headlines by becoming the fastest application to hit 100 million monthly active users, achieving this milestone in just two months.
By November 2023, ChatGPT had solidified its position with 100 million weekly active users, which surged to 300 million by December 2024, and further to 400 million by February 2025.
A16z attributes the initial consumer enthusiasm for ChatGPT to its novelty; users were curious to explore the app’s capabilities, albeit with uncertainty about how it would integrate into their day-to-day routines.

ChatGPT’s recent surge in user engagement follows the introduction of innovative models and features, notably the rollout of GPT-4o, which enhanced its multimodal capabilities. Following the launch of this model, there was a notable uptick in ChatGPT’s usage from April to May 2024.
This momentum was sustained with the introduction of the Advanced Voice Mode, leading to further increases in usage from July to August 2024. Following that, the o1 model series contributed to heightened engagement from September to October 2024.
The report highlights that ChatGPT’s performance on mobile has been particularly strong, with the user base growing steadily, increasing between 5% and 15% each month over the past year. Out of ChatGPT’s total 400 million weekly active users, 175 million users are now engaging with the platform via mobile devices.
The analysis also touches on the competitive landscape, noting the rise of rivals like DeepSeek, which secured the No. 2 global position within just 10 days and captured 15% of ChatGPT’s mobile audience by February.
Interestingly, data from mobile analytics provider Sensor Tower suggests that DeepSeek users demonstrate slightly higher engagement compared to users of Perplexity and Claude, although it still trails behind ChatGPT in overall user engagement.

The new market report includes additional insights and recommendations for AI developers and programmers, as well as rankings of the leading AI applications by category and revenue, along with lists of top generative AI apps across both mobile and web platforms.
In the realm of generative AI applications, ChatGPT continues to stand out, holding the top position for unique monthly visits on web platforms as well as among active mobile users, as highlighted in the report citing data from market intelligence provider Similarweb.
