OpenAI has welcomed Zico Kolter onto its board of directors.
As a professor and the head of the machine learning department at Carnegie Mellon, Kolter is deeply engaged in AI safety research. OpenAI heralds his addition as a “crucial technical leader for our governance,” according to an announcement on their official blog.
The topic of AI safety is of paramount importance at the firm. The enlistment of Kolter is particularly noteworthy following the departure of several key personnel dedicated to safety concerns, such as co-founder Ilya Sutskever. It’s reported that some of these departures occurred within Sutskever’s “Superalignment” group, which had been concentrating on the governance of “superintelligent” AI entities but allegedly faced restrictions regarding computational resources initially pledged.
In his new role, Kolter is set to serve on the OpenAI board’s Safety and Security Committee with fellow directors Bret Taylor, Adam D’Angelo, Paul Nakasone, Nicole Seligman, CEO Sam Altman, and other technical specialists from OpenAI. This committee plays a critical role in guiding the safety and security policies for the organization’s initiatives. Despite its significance, some observers have voiced concerns about its composition predominantly consisting of internal members, as highlighted in a previous discussion in May.
Chairman of the OpenAI board, Taylor, remarked: “Zico brings a profound technical expertise and insight into AI safety and integrity, enhancing our mission to develop artificial intelligence that benefits all of humanity.”
Having previously held the position of chief data scientist at C3.ai, Kolter completed his PhD in computer science at Stanford University in 2010, and then pursued a postdoctoral fellowship at MIT until 2012. His work has included innovations in overcoming AI safeguard systems through sophisticated optimization methods.
Kolter is not new to collaborations within the industry and currently holds roles as the “chief expert” at Bosch and the principal technical consultant at the AI startup Gray Swan.
