California Driver’s Licenses to Be Supported by Apple, Google Wallets Shortly

In the near future, individuals living in California will have the ability to integrate their driver’s license or state identification into their Apple Wallet or Google Wallet applications. This development was revealed by the state’s officials recently, indicating the imminent rollout of digital ID support.

Residents of California who add their ID to either Apple Wallet or Google Wallet will gain the convenience of using their smartphones to display their ID at selected TSA checkpoints and participating businesses. Additionally, these digital IDs can be utilized within certain applications to confirm one’s age or identity.

States that have already embraced the concept of digital driver’s licenses and state IDs encompass Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, and Ohio.

To incorporate your ID into the Apple Wallet, users should press the “+” icon situated at the app’s upper section, then opt for “Driver’s License or State ID.” Following this, it is necessary to adhere to the guidance on the screen to initiate the configuration and validation process. This involves capturing a selfie and scanning both sides of your driver’s license or state ID.

For inclusion in Google Wallet, tapping the “Add to Wallet” function and selecting “ID card” is required. Subsequently, choosing your state and proceeding with the verification procedure with your physical ID is necessary.

California’s Governor Gavin Newsom stated, “By collaborating with Apple and Google, notable Californian enterprises, we’re delivering driver’s licenses and ID cards that are not only convenient but also private and secure, right on individuals’ smartphones.” He expressed that this measure signifies progress in the state’s dedication to improving service for all Californians by incorporating everyday technology.

It was mentioned on the governor’s website that over half a million Californians have already utilized the California DMV Wallet app to attach a mobile driver’s license (mDL) to their phones. The mDL pilot scheme currently caps participation at 1.5 million individuals.

The Secure Technology Alliance reports that more than 20 states are contemplating the introduction of mobile digital licenses at present.

Among these states are Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and Wyoming.
