Jones has passionately championed the idea of leisurely and eco-friendlier travel—offering itineraries that eschew flights in favour of ground and water transport such as trains, buses, and ferries. This approach lets travelers immerse themselves in the landscape and explore hidden gems away from bustling tourist spots. Her strategy has proven effective, with Byway experiencing a threefold increase in growth year after year, culminating in over 4,200 trips sold, Jones shared with TechCrunch.

The rising ecological awareness among vacationers, seeking alternatives to air travel, coupled with the challenges of overcrowding in famed city destinations across Europe, has fueled interest in Jones’s business concept. From Amsterdam to Venice, and even acclaimed vacation isles, tighter community tolerance towards visitors is evident due to over-tourism impacts.

These issues were forefront in Jones’s mind when brainstorming a startup concept, following her stint at the London-based startup incubator Founders Factory and a decade at digital advertising firm Unruly, where she served on the executive team as the global SVP of data.

Today, Byway has grown to a 40-person team. The latest influx of Series A funds, led by Heartcore Capital and supported by Eka Ventures and returning angel investors, is earmarked for geographical expansion and enhancing the company’s workforce, particularly engineering talent to bolster their proprietary AI-driven trip planning technology.

Currently, about 60% of Byway’s holiday packages are booked through its online platform, demonstrating the efficiency and appeal of its custom-built JourneyAI. The remaining 40% of travel plans are crafted through a human-centric concierge service, yet Jones anticipates an even greater reliance on the AI tool as it evolves with additional data and sharper algorithms.

Delightful yet Robust

Jones, a proponent of scenic travel and never a car owner herself, viewed the untapped potential in designing exquisite overland voyages that promise captivating landscapes and unique travel moments—from the excitement of a ferry ride to the charm of a sleeper train.

Such multi-stop journeys shift the rhythm of travel, allowing for a deeper exploration that benefits both the environment and the economies of less-traveled locales, alleviating congestion in well-known spots. Byway’s AI plays a pivotal role in simplifying the complex logistics inherent in such trips.

Byway’s AI tailors trips by digesting a vast array of data, from transport schedules and fares to customer preferences and successful past itineraries, aiming to align travelers with experiences that have delighted similar explorers.

Highlighting the depth of customization, Jones explains how the system accounts for different traveler profiles, such as couples versus families, enhancing its recommendations based on a wealth of nuanced details.

Clients can initiate the planning process by inputting basic trip parameters or by customizing pre-existing itineraries suggested on Byway’s platform, underscoring the tool’s adaptability and precision.

Moreover, Jones emphasizes the functionality of JourneyAI in managing potential travel disruptions, designing plans with contingency options to ensure a smooth experience despite unforeseeable events.

Acknowledging the collaborative aspect of her business model, Jones plans to utilize technological advancements from the recent funding to automate the majority of disruption management in the near future, enhancing real-time support for travelers.

Byway also offers dedicated WhatsApp groups for customers, ensuring easy communication and support throughout their travels, reinforcing the commitment to resolve any issues directly and efficiently.

In terms of partnerships for booking tickets and accommodations, Byway integrates with third-party services, allowing the team to concentrate on refining its proprietary JourneyAI, which stands as the cornerstone of their innovation.

Incorporating Human Insight

Despite the advanced capabilities of their technology, a significant number of Byway’s customers still prefer the touch of human assistance for trip planning. Jones remains optimistic about enhancing the AI’s capability to fulfill even the most unique travel desires, alongside maintaining personalized customer engagement.

She also notes the relevance of human intuition in curating quality content and experiences, with her team collaborating closely with local destination partners and commissioning journalists to ensure rich, authentic travel insights.

As Byway prepares for further expansion, addressing operational hurdles such as regulatory adjustments post-Brexit remains a priority, with the establishment of a Netherlands-based entity facilitating continued service excellence across Europe.
