The social media platform Bluesky is on the verge of introducing enhancements that will grant users greater authority over who can respond to their posts. According to Bluesky developer Paul Frazee, a new “followers only” option is set to be implemented, allowing users to restrict replies accordingly. Additionally, Frazee mentioned that users will have the ability to establish their default reply preferences. This means that individuals who wish to consistently limit responses to their followers alone will have the option to do so.
These updates aim to further distinguish the platform from its primary competitors, which include Elon Musk’s X and Meta’s Threads.
On X, individuals have the option to select from various reply controls such as “Everyone,” “Accounts you follow,” “Verified accounts,” and “Only accounts you mention.” Additionally, users can post within specific Communities to further limit their post’s accessibility.
In contrast, Threads users can opt for reply settings like “Anyone,” “Profiles you follow,” and “Mentioned only.”
Bluesky has thus far adopted a comparable array of reply configurations to its competitors, enabling users to restrict responses to their posts to options like “Everybody,” “Nobody,” “Mentioned Users,” and “Followed Users.” Users can also combine the last two selections with any lists they have created.
The introduction of a “followers only” reply option brings a fresh perspective, which Frazee believes could lessen the intensity of “going viral” and mitigate “context collapse.” This phenomenon occurs when the audience for a viral post wildly stretches beyond its original scope, leading to potential misunderstandings or confusion.
Frazee clarifies that this modification will solely dictate who can respond to a post, without affecting its visibility.
Users of Bluesky have been advocating for a “followers only” reply option for quite some time. Notably, Frazee was engaged in a discussion about such a feature with a user back in December 2023.
Moreover, the foundational AT Protocol that underpins Bluesky is set for an upgrade to better support this feature in the foreseeable future.
