Bluesky Poised to Introduce Blue Check Verification Soon

by admin

Bluesky is set to introduce a new verification system, akin to the blue checkmark feature previously implemented by Twitter (now X). Recent observations from reverse engineer, alice.mosphere.at, revealed modifications in the app’s GitHub repository that hint at a unique approach to account verification.

Rather than solely depending on Bluesky to validate accounts, the new system will involve multiple organisations designated as “trusted verifiers.” These entities will have the power to grant blue checks independently, indicating that Bluesky aims to actively verify notable users while decentralising the verification process.

This new method may be officially announced as soon as Monday, with a notable blog post in their registry bearing a date of April 21, 2025, suggesting the timeline for the rollout. Currently, Bluesky allows users to verify themselves by linking their accounts to established websites, but CEO Jay Graber has suggested there may be more varied mechanisms for verification in the future.

The upcoming system will include a blue circle with a white checkmark for verified users, while trusted verifiers will be identified by scalloped blue circles containing the same checkmark. An image linked to the new verification system indicates that credible news organisations, such as The New York Times, could soon be empowered to validate users. By clicking on a user’s blue check, others will be able to see which organisations provided the verification.

Bluesky’s strategy stands in contrast to X’s verification approach. Elon Musk had shifted X’s system, favouring a paid model for acquiring verification, which some have criticized for compromising the integrity of the blue checkmark. Critics argue that this has diminished the value of verification on X and has even led to bot accounts receiving validation.

In comparison, Bluesky’s decentralised verification framework seems set to democratise the process, potentially allowing a broader range of users to attain verified status. The ultimate effectiveness of this system in practice, however, remains to be seen.

As Bluesky continues to evolve, the community awaits the specifics of this innovative verification model, which could significantly influence how authenticity is managed across social platforms.
