Bluesky Introduces ‘Followers-Only’ Reply Feature

by admin

On Monday, social networking platform Bluesky, a competitor to X, introduced a new update to its application, featuring the long-awaited “followers only” option that allows users to restrict replies to their posts, along with a new “search posts” capability for user profiles.

The implementation of the “followers only” feature aims to set Bluesky apart from industry giants like X and Meta’s Threads, while the “search posts” functionality mirrors a feature introduced by X (previously known as Twitter) in 2021.

The “followers only” option is a significant improvement for many users on Bluesky, enabling them to confine discussions to selected connections.

This setting proves especially valuable when content gains unexpected popularity, drawing in audiences beyond one’s typical follower group. Such scenarios often result in “content collapse,” where individuals unfamiliar with the original message start to add their comments, creating unnecessary noise in the replies. This issue has been prevalent on Twitter/X, and Bluesky aims to prevent similar occurrences.

In contrast, users on X can select from various reply controls, including “Everyone,” “Accounts you follow,” “Verified accounts,” and “Only accounts you mention.” They also have the option to post to specific Communities to further limit visibility.

On Threads, users are able to choose from “Anyone,” “Profiles you follow,” and “Mentioned only.”

Bluesky users interested in activating this new feature can modify their default settings for future posts by navigating to the app’s Settings under Moderation > Interaction Settings.

Additionally, the newly introduced search feature on user profiles simplifies the process of locating specific posts authored by individuals you know.

To access both features, make sure to update your app to version 1.98. (It’s worth noting that if someone who replies to your post doesn’t follow you and hasn’t updated their app, their reply may still be submitted but won’t be visible to you if you have the “followers only” setting enabled.)

This update also includes some minor enhancements, such as improvements to the search function and several bug fixes.
