Bluesky Introduces Blue Check Verification System

by admin

Bluesky has officially announced the introduction of its blue check verification system, confirming earlier speculations about this upcoming feature on the platform. Much like Twitter’s original blue check, the Bluesky version aims to authenticate the legitimacy of notable accounts, allowing users to have greater confidence in the authenticity of the posts from these accounts.

In the initial rollout, Bluesky will collaborate with a select group of “Trusted Verifiers.” These are independent organisations that will have the authority to verify the accounts of their team members. For instance, a company could use the service to verify its public relations personnel, enhancing the credibility of sources disseminating company information.

To ensure the authenticity of new verifications, Bluesky’s moderation team will rigorously assess each request. While the platform already allowed users to verify their accounts through domain ownership—linking their Bluesky usernames to their authoritative websites—this new blue check feature aims to add another layer of security. For instance, TechCrunch’s account is verified by its connection to the TechCrunch website, making it harder for impersonators to misrepresent the brand.

This additional verification step is particularly beneficial for public figures such as celebrities, journalists, and politicians, as it helps combat misinformation propagated by impersonators. Currently, Bluesky reports that over 270,000 accounts have already linked their usernames to a specific domain.

In their blog post, the Bluesky team highlighted that while domain handles are crucial for verification, they’ve received feedback indicating that users would appreciate a more visible marker for identifying authentic accounts.

As for the application process, Bluesky will not be accepting verification requests during the initial launch. However, they have plans to introduce a request form in the future, allowing more users to seek verification as the system matures.

In summary, Bluesky’s blue check verification aims to enhance trust among users by ensuring that notable accounts are legitimate, alongside the platform’s existing domain verification measures. With a focus on authenticity, the rollout of this feature is set to strengthen the integrity of communications on the platform.
