BKR Capital, a Canadian venture capital firm, has announced the successful closure of CA$20 million (approximately AU$14.5 million) for its second fund, bringing it closer to a target of CA$50 million. The fund focuses on investing in high-growth technology enterprises founded by members of the Black community, with an emphasis on solutions that enhance the future of work, living, and global connectivity.
Managing partner Lise Birikundavyi stated that while the firm primarily targets Canadian companies, it remains open to opportunities globally. The typical investment size ranges from AU$250,000 to AU$1.5 million.
A significant aspect of BKR Capital’s strategy is its understanding of the demographics within Canada, where nearly 70% of the Black population consists of first- or second-generation immigrants. This background enables founders to think globally from inception, fostering early access to international markets and providing a competitive edge in scaling their businesses.
In contrast to some U.S. investors who are hesitant to highlight diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, Birikundavyi notes that BKR Capital adopts a different perspective. She argues that the conversation in Canada is shifting towards performance rather than retreating from DEI principles. By focusing on overlooked founders, the firm believes it can uncover valuable investment opportunities, which are more about financial gain than solely supporting DEI initiatives.
Birikundavyi emphasised that expanding access to these historically overlooked founders leads to high-quality deals and does not merely revolve around diversity metrics. Instead, she sees inclusive investing as beneficial for the broader ecosystem, yielding potentially lucrative prospects.
Founded in 2021, BKR Capital initially raised AU$22 million for its first fund, which is reportedly performing better than 75% of other comparable funds launched in that period. The firm aims to finalize the closure of Fund II by December and anticipates investing in around 25 companies.
BKR Capital is positioned to leverage diverse lived experiences and diverse markets, which they believe can reveal unique venture opportunities that might otherwise be overlooked.
