Binge: The Movie Tracker App That Alerts You to Jump Scares As They Happen

by admin

A new app called Binge has emerged from an indie developer known for innovative applications like the social platform Mammoth and AI news reader Bulletin. This unique movie and TV tracking application features a distinctive capability: it alerts users to impending jump scares while watching horror films.

Binge utilises Apple’s Live Activities feature, delivering real-time notifications directly to the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island, similar to how other apps keep you updated on live events such as food deliveries or sports scores. To activate the jump scare alerts, users simply tap a clock icon on the jump scare detail page before starting a film. There’s even an option to filter for only the most significant scares.

Entering a competitive market with established platforms like Letterboxd, TV Time, and JustWatch, Binge sets itself apart through the use of Apple-specific functionalities, including iCloud sync and the aforementioned Live Activities. Beyond standard tracking features, Binge offers options like adding private notes, post-credit scene details, an awards breakdown, episode ratings graphs, and integration with other tracking applications.

Shihab Mehboob, the app’s developer, envisions Binge as a comprehensive tracking tool for movies, TV shows, collections, actors, streaming services, networks, and production companies. Typical details such as release dates, descriptions, trailers, cast and crew info, reviews, and genres are also included. Users can curate watchlists, mark content as seen, and quickly identify where to stream particular titles—a vital function as content continues to shift among services.

Moreover, Binge offers access to films still in theatres, helping users remember which ones to stream later at home. The app pulls data from popular databases like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb, offering ratings and a parent guide that outlines the amount of violence, sexual content, and similar criteria for each title.

Additional features include the ability to rate content, sync with Trakt, browse tailored recommendations, see an awards winners breakdown, and create custom collections. The app also supports tagging for ownership, provides Home and Lock Screen widgets, and includes in-app customisation options.

Binge is accessible on iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. It is free to download but requires a subscription or one-time payment for access to premium features like jump scare notifications. Currently, subscriptions are priced at $1.99 per month or $17.99 per year, while a one-off payment of $49.99 unlocks premium features indefinitely.
