Bill Weber has stepped down as CEO of Firefly Aerospace, ending his nearly two-year leadership at the helm of the company known for producing launch vehicles, lunar landers, and orbital vehicles, as announced by the company late Wednesday.
As the company begins the hunt for Weber’s successor, Peter Schumacher, a member of the board, has been appointed as the interim CEO, according to a statement posted on their official site. A special Transition Committee has been established to facilitate the CEO search.
Weber, who joined the firm following its acquisition by AE Industrial Partners in February 2022, is a seasoned leader in the aerospace sector. His past roles include CEO of KeyW Corporation, which provides intelligence and analytics to the U.S. defense and intelligence sectors, and president of governmental service provider XLA.
Weber’s exit was revealed merely two days after Payload reported that Firefly Aerospace was probing into allegations of Weber’s improper relationship with a female staff member. Initially, a company spokesperson indicated to Payload that preliminary findings did not corroborate the allegations.
A company representative refrained from confirming if Weber’s resignation was a consequence of this investigation, adhering to the company’s privacy stance. Weber has yet to make a comment in response to inquiries from TechCrunch.
Aiming to carve out a larger segment of the launch market currently dominated by firms like SpaceX and Rocket Lab, Firefly is focusing on its compact Alpha rocket. Additionally, the company is in the process of developing the Blue Ghost lunar lander, slated for its inaugural launch later this year, and is working on a series of orbital transfer vehicles intended to enhance the in-space maneuverability of satellites.
In May, Bloomberg disclosed information that AEI, alongside other investors, was contemplating the sale of the Texas-based enterprise in a transaction that could value the business at $1.5 billion.
