Before Midjourney Emerged, NightCafe Was Already Here — And It Continues to Thrive

by admin

Elle Russell, a founder of the Cairns, Australia-based NightCafe, which equips users with AI-driven artistic creation tools, shies away from public attention.

“I prefer the anonymity my screens provide,” she shared during a recent conversation.

NightCafe maintains a similarly discreet presence.

Despite a quieter media presence in comparison to competitors like Midjourney, NightCafe, a project co-launched by Elle and her partner Angus Russell five years ago, boasts impressive impact. Operating on a bootstrap model and achieving profitability in “most months,” as per Elle, the platform hosts over 25 million users who have generated close to a billion images.

In an effort to demystify the longstanding generative art marketplace online, I discussed with Elle the origin story of NightCafe, the hurdles it faces, and its future trajectory as envisioned by Elle and Angus.

A portal for wall decor

The inception of NightCafe can be traced back to Angus’ relocation to a terraced house in Sydney’s Inner West, which lacked decorative art pieces. A comment from a visitor sparked an idea, though finding appealing prints proved difficult for Angus.

In 2019, Angus, armed with a design degree and entrepreneurial experience in design startups, initiated a sideline: creating a digital marketplace for AI-generated art pieces. He named it NightCafe, inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s “The Night Café.”

The venture did not take off initially.

While users enjoyed making art for free, the idea of purchasing wall prints, the sole revenue source for the site, did not catch on.

A significant hosting bill spike one week, caused by massive image generation, prompted Angus to implement a credits system. This led to users requesting the option to purchase additional credits, turning the website’s finances around overnight.

Elle then stepped in to oversee the operational aspects of NightCafe. “With two bachelor’s degrees in business and communication, as well as my CPA certification, it just made sense,” she remarked.

NightCafe’s viral trajectory

NightCafe’s next major push came in mid-2021 with the announcement of DALL-E by OpenAI.

DALL-E represented the cutting edge in image-generation AI at the time. Although OpenAI did not make it publicly available, other enthusiasts began developing open source versions. Angus was quick to incorporate VQGAN+CLIP, a popular alternative, after investing in the necessary hardware.

This investment quickly paid dividends.

Creations using VQGAN+CLIP on NightCafe gained tremendous popularity on Reddit, resulting in a record $17,000 revenue day for the platform. This success led Angus to dedicate himself full-time to NightCafe.

A marketplace of models

NightCafe today differs significantly from its initial version.

While it continues to run some models on its servers, NightCafe has expanded its offerings to include third-party generators via API integrations, effectively serving as a bespoke interface for these services.

NightCafe additionally sustains its initial model of printing services, offering custom merchandise like mugs, T-shirts, and prints featuring user-generated artwork.

“We see ourselves as a user interface and community-focused enterprise,” Elle explained. “Lacking any AI or machine learning capabilities internally, we compile accessible image models for engaging and enjoyable use.”

NightCafe enhances the user experience with chatrooms for art sharing and collaboration, as well as hosting official competitions for spotlight opportunities.

Recently, NightCafe introduced model fine-tuning, enabling personalization through user-uploaded example images. This feature comes with strict moderation to prevent misuse, including deepfake generation.

NightCafe operates on a freemium model, with additional image generation credits available for purchase. Subscription options offer benefits like access to more powerful models, the ability to tip creators, fine-tuning capabilities, and an increased limit on image production, all at competitive pricing.

This business model has proven successful, positioning NightCafe as a profitable entity with a reported annual revenue of $4 million and a significant user base, with approximately one million monthly visitors and 20,000 subscribers.

In the ever-competitive AI art creation market, NightCafe differentiates itself with a focus on community, considering platforms like Leonardo, Civitai, and Midjourney as its main competitors.

NightCafe’s decision to aggregate rather than train its AI models might shield it from ongoing legal battles plaguing the AI industry. However, copyright still poses questions regarding user-generated content and model usage.

NightCafe places copyright responsibility firmly in the hands of its users, adhering to legal standards across regions while moderating content to maintain a respectful and compliant community.

Balancing politics and deepfake concerns

In our discussion on content moderation, NightCafe’s stance is to foster creativity without becoming a battleground for political disputes, a fine line to walk given the global debate over AI’s role in spreading disinformation and creating deepfakes.

Envisioning NightCafe’s future

NightCafe is at a crossroads like many in the AI art space, carefully expanding its model offerings and community features while navigating the uncertain terrain of upcoming regulations and court decisions.

Yet, with a commitment to accessibility and community, NightCafe remains optimistic about its path forward, focusing on aggregation and interface enhancement to distinguish itself in an evolving market.
