The advent of AI and expansive language models (LLMs) offers the capability to comprehend a broader scope of context and process information more intuitively, paving the way for numerous companies to explore wearable technologies that integrate AI into everyday life.
Bee AI has recently joined this burgeoning field, having successfully secured $7 million in funding spearheaded by Exor. The funding is aimed at advancing the development of its AI-powered wearable assistant. This assistant is designed to understand and learn from user interactions, manage tasks, provide reminders based on context, and compile lists. Additionally, Bee AI has developed an app for the Apple Watch to accompany its wearable device.
The announced funding amount also encompasses a $1.5 million pre-seed investment previously acquired by the startup. Notable participants in this funding round include Greycroft, New Wave VC, Banana Capital, and investor and television executive Brian Bedol, known for founding several sports networks.

Maria de Lourdes Zollo, co-founder and CEO of Bee AI, shared with TechCrunch that while the prime emphasis remains on the software fueling the assistant, a proprietary wearable was created to circumvent the constant use of the smartphone’s microphone.
The inventive device and accompanying app enable a multitude of functionalities as previously described. However, Bee AI harbors broader ambitions. De Lourdes Zollo elucidated plans to offer consumers a “cloud phone” that serves as a virtual extension of their existing phone, permitting access to accounts and notifications. Early stage testing reveals features such as notification reading, important message and event reminders, and on-the-spot email, tweet drafting, and shopping recommendations.
At present, the only interaction option with the device is a mute button to halt recording. Nonetheless, the firm is investigating additional uses for the button, including command activation.

Prospects and Future Plans
Given the nascent stage of generative AI, there are prevailing concerns over the accuracy of its generated outputs, casting a shadow of skepticism over the domain Bee AI intends to penetrate. Competitors like Rabbit have ventured into AI-driven agents capable of navigating user interfaces to perform tasks, yet the reliability of such processes remains unproven based on early evaluations.
Nevertheless, several startups remain undeterred, tackling these challenges with the hope of pioneering effective solutions. Firms backed by A16z, such as Limitless and Friend, are also venturing into wearables that offer functionalities akin to Bee AI’s, albeit with distinctive use-cases. De Lourdes Zollo is optimistic about the advancements in AI models and plans for Bee AI to adopt a cautious strategy by concentrating on a select number of tasks.
De Lourdes Zollo launched Bee AI alongside Ethan Sutin (CTO), her colleague from the video chat application Squad, which Sutin founded along with Esther Crawford (who is also an angel investor in Bee AI). Their tenure at Twitter, where Sutin led engineering efforts and de Lourdes Zollo contributed to the launch of Twitter Spaces, bolsters their foundation.
The team behind Bee AI has garnered the confidence of its investors, with Ian Sigalow, managing partner at Greycroft, expressing strong belief in the team’s potential based on their impressive track record and engineering prowess, having successfully delivered products to millions of users, notably at Twitter.
However, the potential for privacy concerns cannot be ignored with a device designed to listen constantly. While the product is currently in beta, it also leverages ambient conversations to enhance model precision. The company is committed to eliminating the use of voices from non-consenting individuals before the official launch. Additionally, Bee AI ensures privacy by processing only transcriptions rather than storing audio recordings.
Bee AI is set to be marketed at $49, with an accompanying subscription service priced at $19 monthly, aiming to begin accepting pre-orders ahead of Black Friday.
