Introducing Avec: A Revolutionary Email Experience on Mobile
Following efforts from apps like Superhuman and Mimestream to simplify email management on desktops, a new mobile application named Avec is changing the game with a distinctive approach. Initially launched on iOS, Avec incorporates a Tinder-like interface to navigate your inbox seamlessly, alongside voice-based reply capabilities.
Users interact with their emails using swipe cards—swiping left to defer emails for later attention and right to archive or mark them as complete. This card layout provides an engaging way to manage emails efficiently. Additionally, Avec allows users to respond to emails using voice commands; a long press on a button records your message, which is then transcribed into a draft for review and editing.
What sets Avec apart is its ability to leverage AI for improving communication. Unlike apps like Wispr Flow and Willow, which are limited by Apple’s APIs and necessitate separate keyboard installations, Avec understands the context of your emails, adapts to your unique communication style, and makes tailored suggestions to enhance clarity and tone.
Moreover, Avec provides a feature for marking emails as unimportant. If you opt to swipe down on an email, it collects these messages and presents them in a consolidated pile rather than bombarding you with multiple insignificant items. For users who favour traditional layouts, there’s also a conventional list view available.
Founded by Jonathan Unikowksi, a former product engineer at Replit, Avec arose from a desire to innovate email—a platform that he believes has seen little transformation in twenty-five years. He reflects on Gmail being the last significant innovation and highlights the potential for better management through thoughtful design and advanced AI tools.
Competing against established email applications like Superhuman, Shortwave, and Basecamp’s Hey, which attempts to redefine email entirely, Avec focuses specifically on mobile usability. Unikowksi explains that mobile constraints can inspire creativity, as users predominantly access emails on their smartphones, where clarity and efficiency are paramount.
Currently, Avec is freely accessible for Gmail users in the U.S., with plans underway to integrate Outlook support in the future. While Unikowksi has hinted at possible premium features down the line, the specifics are still being conceptualized. Avec has successfully garnered $8.4 million in funding from noteworthy investors, including Lightspeed and Haystack, as well as industry leaders like Replit CEO Amjad Massad.
With its innovative swipe interface, the ability to respond via voice, and enhanced email management strategies, Avec aims to redefine how users engage with their inboxes on mobile devices, demonstrating that the future of email can indeed be brighter and more user-friendly.
