AvatarOS Secures $7 Million Seed Funding from M13 to Develop an AI-Driven Virtual Influencer Platform

by admin

Recently, the landscape of digital avatars has seen a resurgence, fueled by advancements in generative AI, following the initial surge of interest in the metaverse. While the initial excitement has faded, the ability to create diverse virtual identities has sparked new interest. Companies are exploring various applications for avatars, with players like D-ID and Synthesia focused on enterprise solutions, Zoom utilizing them for meetings, Glance in the fashion industry, Praktika for educational purposes, and platforms like TikTok and Captions catering to content creators.

Notably, Isaac Bratzel, known for establishing famous virtual personalities such as Lil Miquela and Amelia 2.0, believes there’s a gap in the market for high-quality avatars that not only look impressive but also possess unique personality traits. This belief inspired him to create AvatarOS.

Bratzel has a background in design roles with notable companies, including IPSoft, where he developed Amelia 2.0, virtual influencer firm Brud, home of Lil Miquela, and Dapper Labs post-acquisition of Brud. He founded AvatarOS after his departure from Dapper Labs in 2022.

AvatarOS recently secured $7 million in seed funding, led by M13’s Latif Peracha, with contributions from the Andreessen Horowitz Games Fund, HF0, Valia Ventures, and Mento VC.

Currently, AvatarOS is in the initial stages of identifying a suitable product-market fit. Bratzel emphasized that the company recognizes that customers don’t always desire what’s technically feasible or trendy.

Latif Peracha from M13 noted that this funding round is primarily for exploration, providing a chance to support a founder with an impressive background in the avatar domain.

“We aim to define the right business model throughout this exploratory phase and gain a clearer understanding of our future direction. Given Isaac’s experience from IPSoft to Brud, he is undoubtedly the ideal candidate to lead this venture,” Peracha stated.

Interestingly, part of Peracha’s due diligence involved conversing with one of Bratzel’s avatars to learn more about him.

Bratzel explained that AvatarOS is focused on crafting high-quality 3D avatars, steering clear of the click-to-generate content trend.

“A clear analogy is the influx of spam emails. Once content creation becomes effortless, it saturates the environment. We aim to differentiate ourselves amidst this content overload; that’s our goal in the avatar arena,” Bratzel shared with TechCrunch during a conversation.

“While some existing products possess technology for avatar generation, our focus remains on the avatars themselves. Look at Lil Miquela – she is a permanent entity, transcending singular projects, and has accumulated value over time,” he remarked.

The company is currently onboarding beta testers, providing them access to select existing avatars, while also rolling out a straightforward API for client integration of avatars into their platforms. Bratzel indicated that these organizations could enhance these avatars using large language models (LLMs) to supply information while manipulating elements like camera angles and viewpoints.

AvatarOS is initially producing high-end, personalized avatars for clients but aims to develop more creation tools and customization options in the future. Bratzel emphasized that the company’s distinctiveness would lie in how avatars navigate their digital environment.

“The key factor for us is that humans exhibit unique movements. Most avatar solutions can generate something resembling you but move in a generic fashion. We aspire to replicate the natural variations in human movement,” he declared.

The company plans to utilize the investment to expand its team and develop a machine learning-based deformer designed to produce lifelike movements for avatars.
