Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, has unveiled a new AI-powered tool aimed at assisting bloggers in crafting more concise and intelligible content.
This new tool is part of a growing list of writing aids introduced in recent years, including those from privacy-focused app creator Proton and the tech giant Google.
Write Brief with AI, the name of Automattic’s latest offering, builds on a generative AI writing assistant released for WordPress last year. It aids users in developing content via text prompts and adjusting their writing’s tone to achieve a more casual or understanding style, among other options.
Presently in beta, the latest utility is a component of Jetpack, a collection of tools that enhance the functionality of WordPress.com websites, and is also accessible via a plugin for self-hosted WordPress installations. However, access to Write Brief with AI is exclusively free for WordPress.com sites during this preliminary beta stage, via the Jetpack icon located in the editor’s top-right corner.

With this tool, WordPress guides users in refining their prose, indicating when descriptions are overly verbose and offering a “Suggest” button to instantly simplify any sentence.

Moreover, it advises users on achieving a more assertive tone by highlighting overuse of tentative language or complex terms that may hinder understanding for some readers.
Additionally, the tool offers writers a readability score considering three aspects: complexity, sentence length, and confidence.

WordPress and the Web
As ChatGPT shines as a leading figure in the generative AI landscape, Automattic secures a notable position as a key influencer across the vast expanse of the internet. The firm contributes to both the open-source WordPress project and the commercial operations of WordPress.com, ensuring that integrating AI capabilities into its widespread blogging framework has the potential for wide adoption.
Originating from an internal hackathon, Write Brief with AI was first deployed among Automattic staff before deciding to offer it publicly. “It quickly became a beloved and invaluable tool, prompting us to share it with the wider world,” stated Automattic senior product designer Noam Almosnino in a blog entry.
While the expansive AI writing assistant from Automattic launched last year is multilingual, Write Brief with AI currently supports only English.
