Aura, a digital photo frame company founded by former Twitter employees Abdur Chowdhury and Eric Jensen, has unveiled the Aspen model, which integrates innovative technology into both the frame and its mobile app. The new Aspen frame, which features a 12-inch HD display, allows users to add captions to their photos. Additionally, the mobile app now includes a people search function, making it easier for users to locate specific images.
Aura aims to create aesthetically pleasing digital photo frames that enhance the display of personal photos at home, coupled with a sophisticated software platform for managing content. Before launching Aspen, Aura offered various other models, such as the Carver and the wall-mounted Walden, already boasting a substantial user base with over 6 million subscribers to its mobile app.
The company has carved a niche for individuals keen on exhibiting their digital memories and sharing them with close friends and family through a private social network. This setup allows users to contribute photos to shared frames, establishing a more intimate connection that differs from conventional social media. Younger, tech-savvy users can manage the frames for older family members, potentially bringing them into this new digital era.
In 2024, Aura reported that customers shared a staggering 784 million photos through their frames, representing a 55% increase year-on-year. The private photo-sharing networks contributed notably, accounting for 50% of the company’s annual sales. Aura noted that its frames display a cumulative total of 5 billion photos and videos each day.
The Aspen frame retails for $229, making it the slimmest in the Aura range at just 0.5 inches thick. It features a 1,600 x 1,200 HD anti-glare display with a 4:3 aspect ratio, designed to present mobile photos in optimal conditions. Aura emphasises that the software management system for the frames is a significant part of their product offering.
The photo-sharing app is user-friendly, allowing for straightforward connectivity to Wi-Fi and rapid photo uploads. It features a two-tab interface for adding new images and managing existing ones. The added People Search feature lets users filter photos by person quickly. This functionality operates locally on devices, ensuring users’ privacy is maintained.
Alongside this capability, users can enhance their displays by adding captions that provide context, such as date and location.
The Aspen frame is available in two colours, Ink and Clay, and comes with a sleek metal stand, textured matting, decorative trim, and a fabric-wrapped cord, all contributing to a high-end aesthetic. Its technical specifications include an ambient light sensor that automatically turns off the frame during the night and a hidden touch bar for unobtrusive navigation and settings adjustment.
With $60 million in funding from the LAGO Innovation Fund, Aura claims to have reached profitability in 2024 and continues to expand.
Correction: The price of the Aspen frame is $229, not $299 as previously stated.
