Audible, Amazon’s audiobook platform, has unveiled a significant partnership with select publishers to transform print and e-books into AI-narrated audiobooks. This move is part of Audible’s strategy to broaden its catalogue and maintain competition against key players like Apple and Spotify in the growing audiobook sector.
Utilising Amazon’s advanced AI technology, Audible will help publishers create audiobooks more efficiently. Publishers can select from an extensive range of over 100 AI-generated voices in various languages including English, French, Spanish, and Italian, and with a variety of accents and dialects, with plans to expand these choices further in the future.
Audible is also preparing to launch a beta version of AI translation within the year. This will offer both text-to-text and speech-to-speech translation capabilities, facilitating translations from English into Spanish, French, Italian, and German. For added precision, publishers can enlist the assistance of professional linguists to review these translations.
Earlier in 2023, Amazon introduced a beta virtual voice tool tailored for self-published authors in the U.S. This tool enables authors to convert their e-books into audiobooks using synthetic speech technology. Last year, Audible engaged a group of audiobook narrators to help train the AI with their voices. A search for “virtual voice” on Audible reveals over 50,000 titles tagged as “Narrated By: Virtual Voice,” demonstrating the appeal of this technology for authors lacking resources for traditional audiobook production.
However, the rise of AI-generated narrations has sparked debate within the publishing ecosystem and among listeners. Critics argue that the quality of these AI audiobooks may not meet the standards of traditional narration.
In a similar vein, Spotify, which ranks as the second-largest audiobook provider after Audible, has also ventured into AI narration. Earlier this year, Spotify announced a partnership with ElevenLabs, a provider of AI audio solutions, to enhance its audiobook offerings.
As the industry evolves, the integration of AI technology in audiobook narration is likely to reshape the market, presenting both opportunities and challenges for publishers and listeners alike.
