Los Angeles, renowned for its severe traffic congestion, is facing a transport dilemma. With three major global events on the horizon — the 2026 World Cup, the Super Bowl in 2027, and the 2028 Olympics — city officials are on the hunt for innovative traffic solutions, yet many of the city’s transport projects aimed at easing Olympic congestion will not be ready until post-2028.
Enter Archer Aviation, eyeing an opening in this transport challenge.
This pioneer in electric vertical takeoff and landing crafts (eVTOLs) is aiming to disrupt LA’s conventional traffic patterns with a futuristic air taxi service. Beginning in 2026, Archer plans to offer air taxi rides that would turn a two- to three-hour road trip into a swift 10- to 20-minute flight.
In anticipation of its upcoming second-quarter earnings discussion, Archer revealed its selected sites for a network of vertiports across strategic locations. These include the Los Angeles International Airport, the University of Southern California, and several neighborhoods within Los Angeles County and Orange County.
Furthermore, Archer is creating a dedicated vertiport at SoFi Stadium, a venue slated to host notable parts of the World Cup, Super Bowl, and Olympics – all in a bid to finish by the time the Olympics roll around, despite the projected launch extending beyond 2026.
This announcement was made shortly after Archer and Kilroy Realty Corporation inked a deal, marking Kilroy Oyster Point as a vital part of Archer’s urban air mobility scheme for the SF Bay Area.
Archer’s chief commercial officer, Nikhil Goel, shared with TechCrunch that many vertiport locations in Los Angeles are already operational, highlighting the city’s vast but underutilized aviation facilities that merely require setup for charging and passenger processing.

The decision on vertiport locations was informed by comprehensive mobility data analysis in LA. A strategic alliance with Southwest Airlines also provides Archer with access to pivotal customer movement data, guiding the vetting process for vertiport placements.
The rollout of Archer’s service in LA is expected to be incremental from 2026, with Goel forecasting a modest start that will evolve as the company hones its technology, customer service, and community integration.
Archer is ambitiously targeting a commercial launch in select pilots as early as 2025 across six cities worldwide while advancing production of its Midnight eVTOL. The Midnight model boasts a piloting arrangement for four passengers, reaches speeds up to 150 miles per hour and is optimized for consecutive short flights with quick recharge times.
With its production facility in Georgia poised to produce 650 aircraft annually by the end of 2024, and preliminary models being crafted in California, Archer is also navigating the FAA’s certification process to ensure its aircraft meet stringent safety and production standards.
Archer’s advancements signify a shift from science fiction to reality, with Goel affirming the company’s progress through frequent test flights. Their ambition is not just to introduce an eVTOL service by 2026 but to broaden this innovative mode of transport swiftly thereafter.
