Arc Ventures into Electric Commercial and Defense Vessels Following $50M Capital Raise

by admin

Arc Boat Company, a Los Angeles-based startup, is poised for growth as it seeks to enter new markets, including supplying electric propulsion systems for defence contractors. Founded by Mitch Lee, the company aims to “electrify everything on the water” and has recently secured $50 million in a Series C funding round, with backing from prominent investors such as Eclipse, a16z, Menlo Ventures, Lowercarbon Capital, Necessary Ventures, and Offline Ventures.

Lee emphasised that expanding into these new sectors will not detract from Arc’s consumer boat offerings, which are generating significant revenue and demonstrating the durability and capability of its technology to potential commercial clients. This strategy mirrors Tesla’s early path, as noted by Greg Reichow, a former Tesla executive and current partner at Eclipse, who believes that developing robust technology for high-end consumer boats before transitioning to commercial applications is a viable approach for Arc.

The positive reception from commercial and defence sectors has prompted the company to expedite its expansion plans. Lee is optimistic that the entire marine industry will eventually shift towards electric solutions, similar to trends seen in lawn equipment, thanks to the superior experience electric powertrains offer.

Rather than constructing entire vessels for commercial markets, Arc will likely follow a model akin to their recent hybrid tugboat project, where they design and collaborate with shipyards for production. For defence applications, Lee sees a significant opportunity in supplying propulsion systems to primary contractors, noting a considerable unmet demand in electric powertrains.

Lee identified two key drivers influencing commercial interest: the declining costs associated with electric systems and the rising costs of combustion engines, exacerbated by increasing regulatory compliance. He remarked that these combustion engines are increasingly seen as problematic due to their environmental impact.

In the defence realm, there is a growing focus on developing autonomous watercraft, which necessitates enhanced reliability and uptime in power systems. With a team now comprising around 200 employees, Lee anticipates further recruitment in production, engineering, and commercial teams to support these initiatives.

Lee believes that diversifying into both consumer and commercial markets will afford Arc a robust business model, capitalising on the cash flow and margins from consumer sales while securing stable, predictable demand in commercial applications. Reichow expressed confidence in Arc’s ability to adapt swiftly and efficiently, crediting their team—comprising talents from SpaceX, Tesla, and Rivian—as a crucial asset for long-term success.

With a vision to revolutionise marine propulsion, Arc Boat Company is well-positioned to navigate the transition towards electric solutions, leveraging its innovative capabilities to redefine the industry.
