Apple Issues Security Update for Older iPhones and iPads to Shield Against DarkSword Threats

by admin

Apple has issued a crucial security update for older iPhones and iPads to combat a sophisticated set of hacking tools known as DarkSword, which has been linked to data theft from compromised devices. The company announced on Wednesday the release of iOS 18.7.7 and iPadOS 18.7.7, aimed at extending vital security measures to a wider array of devices.

DarkSword is a malicious toolkit that exploits vulnerabilities in Apple devices operating on iOS versions 18.4 to 18.7. By simply visiting compromised websites, users risk having sensitive data—including messages, browsing history, location information, and even cryptocurrency—stolen and transmitted to hackers’ servers. Reports indicate that these tools have already been utilised in attacks targeting users in regions such as China, Malaysia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Ukraine. With the hacking tools now publicly available, security experts warn that they could be misused by a broader range of cybercriminals against individuals running older iOS versions.

For users running the latest Apple software, iOS 26, protections were implemented weeks prior to this update. Apple has also made it possible for those with compatible devices that haven’t yet transitioned to the newest software to benefit from patches addressing DarkSword vulnerabilities.

Despite the availability of security updates, some users have hesitated to upgrade due to concerns over the software’s new “liquid glass” interface, which has received mixed reviews. However, with this latest update, Apple is extending fixes to millions of users who have not yet patched their devices but can upgrade to iOS 26.

For customers who have enabled automatic updates, the new software should download automatically. Apple has also noted that its Lockdown Mode, an optional security feature, provides additional safeguards against DarkSword attacks. According to TechCrunch, there have been no confirmed successful spyware attacks against Apple devices that have Lockdown Mode activated.

By addressing the vulnerabilities associated with DarkSword, Apple aims to enhance the security and safety of its users, underscoring its commitment to protecting devices from cyber threats.
