Apple Introduces TV App, TV+ Streaming Service, and MLS Season Pass for Android Users

by admin

On Wednesday, Apple unveiled that its Apple TV app, which encompasses the Apple TV+ streaming service and MLS Season Pass, will now be available on Android devices. Previously, there was a version designed for Google TV, but this updated app is set to cater to a wider array of Android devices, including smartphones, tablets, and foldable models. Additionally, users with Google accounts on both mobile and living room platforms can now subscribe to Apple TV+ and MLS Season Pass via Google Play billing.

Previously, those using Google TV needed to have an Apple TV+ account to use the app. Now, users can create an Apple account directly on their device and subscribe to the service just as they would on any Apple hardware. The subscription will retain its price of $9.99 per month.

The introduction of the TV app for Android is poised to enhance the reach of Apple’s streaming service, especially among users in international markets where Android devices dominate.

Apple TV+ boasts an array of acclaimed shows including “Severance,” “Slow Horses,” “The Morning Show,” “Presumed Innocent,” “Shrinking,” “Hijack,” “Loot,” “Palm Royale,” “Masters of the Air,” and the beloved “Ted Lasso.” The app also features a selection of Apple Original films such as “Wolfs,” “The Instigators,” “The Family Plan,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “CODA,” and others.

Users of the Android version of the TV app will find familiar features such as offline downloads, saved watchlists, and a “continue watching” function that synchronizes viewing history across different devices. This enables seamless transitions, even if users switch between Android devices and an Apple TV streaming box.

Those using the Android TV app will receive updates on new episodes or TV seasons. However, the application currently lacks built-in notifications for keeping users informed about recent additions and updates. As they explore the TV+ library, users will be guided toward highly-rated and popular content available on TV+, which they can either add to their watchlist or stream immediately.

Android users will also have access to the live broadcasts of Friday Night Baseball.

The MLS Season Pass is available as an optional add-on ($12.99/month or $79/season), giving fans access to all 30 MLS clubs starting February 22. Additionally, users can track their preferred teams and receive tailored recommendations in a dedicated “supporters” section of the app.

A notable distinction between the Android and Apple app versions is that Android users won’t have access to the in-app Store that allows for the renting and purchasing of movies and shows.

Designed specifically for the Android platform, the new app adopts Android’s Material Design guidelines, featuring adaptable layouts that optimize for various screen sizes, including smartphones, tablets, and foldables.

This app release comes five years after Apple first launched Apple TV+ globally, marking its entry into original streaming content.

Recognized for delivering premium content, Apple’s streaming service excels in genres like drama and sci-fi. It made history as the first streaming platform to win an Academy Award for Best Picture with its 2022 smash “CODA” and has recently received nominations for the 2024 Emmys across all major categories, achieving 10 wins in the process (including Creative Arts awards).

The Android version of the Apple TV app is now rolling out to Google Play users starting Wednesday.
