Apple Enhances Mac Studio with New M4 Max and M3 Ultra Configurations

by admin

Apple recently announced its new Mac Studio desktop, aimed at professional users seeking premium performance alongside the newly released M4-powered MacBook Air. The Mac Studio provides the option to choose between the M4 Max and the more powerful M3 Ultra chips, representing a fresh direction for the company.

Starting at AUD 1,999, the Mac Studio is available for pre-order, with in-store availability commencing on March 12. Notably, while the M3 Ultra is classified by Apple as the most powerful chip in its M-series, the chip architecture is an evolution of the M3 lineup, where the Ultra variant is designed to outperform the Max variant. This innovative approach involves linking two M3 Max dies, using Apple’s UltraFusion architecture, to create an M3 Ultra chip. Users can expect significant performance enhancements, delivering up to double the speed compared to the preceding M2 Ultra.

In terms of specifications, the M3 Ultra features a 32-core CPU consisting of 24 performance cores and eight efficiency cores, along with a groundbreaking 80-core GPU. It is built with a staggering 184 billion transistors, touting itself as Apple’s most potent chip to date. Conversely, the M4 Max model includes a 14-core CPU (featuring ten performance cores and four efficiency cores) and a 32-core GPU.

Pricing varies, with the M4 Max configuration providing 36GB of unified memory and 512GB of storage for AUD 1,999. Whereas, the M3 Ultra configuration starts at AUD 3,999, boasting 96GB of unified memory and 1TB of storage. Both configurations allow for extensive upgrades in terms of memory and storage, appealing to users needing substantial capabilities, with options to configure up to 512GB of RAM and 16TB of storage.

While the overall design of the Mac Studio remains largely unchanged from its predecessor, it continues to feature a robust set of ports located mainly at the back, offering four Thunderbolt 5 ports, two standard USB-A ports, an HDMI port, a 10GB Ethernet port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The power button is conveniently positioned on the back, unlike the model’s Mac Mini sibling.

On the front side, the Mac Studio includes an SD card slot and two USB-C ports, with the specifications varying based on the chip choice: the M4 Max offers standard USB-C ports, while the M3 Ultra provides Thunderbolt 5 ports. This enables advanced connectivity options, allowing the M3 Ultra model to support up to eight 6K displays or four 8K displays, demonstrating its capability to handle multiple high-resolution screens efficiently.

In summary, Apple’s Mac Studio positions itself as a high-performance desktop tailored for professionals, showcasing significant advancements in chip architecture and customisation options to cater to demanding workflows.
