During an earnings call on Thursday, Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that DeepSeek’s AI models exemplify “innovation that drives efficiency,” while addressing analysts’ inquiries regarding Apple’s ambitions in the AI sector.
“Overall, I believe that innovation fostering efficiency is beneficial. You can see that reflected in that model,” Cook remarked in response to a question about the potential effects of DeepSeek’s AI models on Apple’s profit margins.
Cook elaborated that Apple utilizes a hybrid approach for its AI endeavors, processing simpler tasks locally through its proprietary AI models on custom silicon chips, while more complex operations are handled in the cloud via partnerships with AI model providers.
He also highlighted that Apple has consistently adopted a “prudent and deliberate” strategy regarding these types of investments.
Currently, Apple’s sole AI partnership is with OpenAI, enabling ChatGPT to address intricate queries from iPhone users within a secure cloud environment.
Recently, OpenAI asserted that it has evidence suggesting its AI models were instrumental in training DeepSeek’s AI models through a method known as distillation. If validated, this claim could contradict OpenAI’s usage policies and diminish DeepSeek’s achievements.
Despite these allegations, Apple’s CEO conveyed admiration for DeepSeek.
Apple has indicated that its partnership with OpenAI is non-exclusive, and the company may explore integrating other AI models, such as Google’s Gemini or Anthropic’s Claude, into the iPhone in the future. However, Cook did not imply that Apple would consider adopting DeepSeek’s models at this time.
Beyond OpenAI’s claims of intellectual property infringement, several technology analysts have suggested that DeepSeek’s AI models were trained using significantly more GPUs and incurred higher computing costs than the company admits. This revelation could indicate that DeepSeek’s AI models were not as efficiently trained as previously believed. Nonetheless, the Chinese AI lab offers access to its models at a considerably lower price point compared to American AI labs.
Investors also bombarded Cook with inquiries regarding the performance of Apple Intelligence.
The gradual rollout of Apple’s AI capabilities has not yielded the immediate surge in iPhone sales that some analysts had anticipated. In fact, sales experienced a slight decline in the last quarter compared to the previous year.
To mitigate concerns over the downturn, Cook stated that the company observed stronger sales in regions where Apple Intelligence had been introduced than in areas where it had not.
Apple has also encountered challenges with its AI features beyond their limited availability. Earlier this month, the company suspended its AI-generated news summaries after the feature produced misleading headlines. In one instance, Apple Intelligence erroneously altered a BBC news headline to inaccurately report that Luigi Mangione, charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had taken his own life—a claim that was false.
