Apple’s iCloud Private Relay, a feature designed to shield paying iCloud subscribers from web trackers, has suffered outages impacting key global markets, leading to difficulties in web service access and application connectivity for its users.
According to TechCrunch, the service interruptions of iCloud Private Relay have impacted a number of Apple consumers across various regions, including Europe, India, Japan, and the USA, starting from Thursday. These intermittent service disruptions hinder users’ ability to browse the internet via the Safari browser and have led to reports of problems with internet connections on other applications.
The current service disruption for iCloud Private Relay is acknowledged on Apple’s System Status webpage, with a notification indicating that the feature could be “slow or unavailable” for certain users.
Introduced in 2021 for iCloud+ users, iCloud Private Relay is geared towards safeguarding Apple customers from web trackers by encrypting the data from users’ devices. This DNS service employs two distinct internet relays to prevent website trackers and internet service providers from profiling users through their IP address, geographic location, and web activity. It operates on the Oblivious DNS-over-HTTPS protocol, a protocol co-developed by Apple and Cloudflare in 2020.
Users currently experiencing the iCloud Private Relay outage can opt to deactivate the service temporarily by navigating through Settings > Profile > iCloud > Private Relay.
Attempts to secure comments from Apple on this matter have not received any response.
