It is widely reported that Nvidia and Apple are engaging in discussions to partake in the forthcoming investment round for OpenAI, potentially elevating the ChatGPT creator’s valuation to $100 billion.
According to information obtained by the New York Times, if the investment proceeds, Thrive Capital, an existing investor in OpenAI, is poised to take the lead on this deal. Reports of Nvidia’s possible participation first emerged from Bloomberg, while The Wall Street Journal was first to disclose Apple’s interest in the funding round. Moreover, Microsoft, holding a 49% stake in OpenAI, might also consider contributing.
Currently, OpenAI is in the pursuit of additional funds. The company has achieved an annual revenue surpassing $3.4 billion as of early this year. However, projections indicate it’s heading towards a $5 billion loss by the end of the year, attributed largely to expansive investments in AI research and development, along with growing personnel needs.
Significant relationships exist between OpenAI and both Nvidia and Apple. OpenAI relies heavily on Nvidia’s GPUs for the operation and enhancement of its generative AI models. In a related development, Apple has recently finalized agreements to incorporate ChatGPT into iOS, marking it a key element of its newly announced series of AI tools, dubbed Apple Intelligence.
