Christian Selig, the creator of the popular third-party Reddit app Apollo, is set to join Digg in an advisory role as it undergoes a revitalisation under the leadership of its original founder, Kevin Rose, and Reddit co-founder, Alexis Ohanian. This partnership is intriguing given that Rose and Ohanian were once competitors in the social media sphere, with Digg and Reddit vying for users’ attention.
Selig’s involvement indicates that Digg is eager to innovate and return to its roots as “the internet’s homepage.” His experience is particularly valuable following the backlash against Reddit’s steep increase in API pricing earlier this year, which rendered apps like Apollo unfeasible. In a widely shared Reddit post, Selig detailed the dire financial implications of the new pricing structure, which would require approximately $1.7 million monthly to maintain Apollo. Consequently, Apollo was shut down, much to the dismay of its user base.
Digg’s CEO, Justin Mezzell, expressed enthusiasm for Selig’s contributions, aiming to cultivate a platform that prioritises user experience and community engagement. Digg is currently on a mission to restore joy to social media interactions, straying from a landscape increasingly filled with AI-generated content that crowds users’ feeds.
While still in the early stages of development, Digg has recently initiated an early-access program dubbed “Groundbreakers.” This initiative requires a one-off fee of $5 to discourage bots, with the proceeds directed to selected non-profit organisations chosen by the Digg community.
In a statement regarding Selig’s new position, Mezzell quipped about the ongoing API controversy at Reddit, alluding to the tumult without directly addressing it. This reflects Digg’s intention to forge its own path distinct from Reddit’s recent challenges. Overall, Selig’s entry into Digg is perceived as a positive move, potentially heralding a revived and user-focused platform for social media enthusiasts.
